The alien ownership bill cleared the house after Senate approval and awaits the governor's signature. Only three votes against it in the lower house. Secretary Bryan urged referendum to block the act, while California lawmakers voiced respect for federal input.

Washington May 2 The Japanese government finds the present Web bill unsatisfactory and expects possible amendments in the House or in conference. If no legal settlement with the United States is reached within three months Japan may request arbitration at The Hague. The 1900 special arbitration treaty expires August 81 unless renewed, and Japan must claim its benefits before then as differences of a legal nature or treaty interpretation would be referred to The Hague court.
Gillard C. Smith, inventor, touts detectaphone and doctoscope devices to hear conversations and see talkers in distant rooms. He plans to arrange use so knowledge of room events is as clear as if the observer were present.
Pueblo Central High School topped the Washburn Field meet with 41 points as 2380 contestants from 20 Colorado schools and one Cheyenne team competed. Colorado Springs High was second with 16 points amid rain and chilly wind. Eubanks of Colorado Springs captured two firsts and a third.
Six spectators witnessed the wreck as fH Henderson’s fast driving caused a collision with a carriage driven by a boy named McDonald from the fort on Sixteenth Street. A wheel tore off the buggy and the boy was shaken up. Henderson agreed to pay for repairs and McDonald’s party agreed not to pursue legal action.
Arthur James and Amos Jenkins of Iowa Center traveled to Cheyenne en route to Rawlins to serve time for drunkenly shooting a steer they misidentified as a bear. After drinking a "little brown jug" they killed the steer, then chopped and carried the carcass home. James drew four years on account of his role. Jenkins received two to three years, with additional penalties noted.
A Metropolitan Opera House tableau features young suffrage supporters representing progress for women. The selection by the Women’s Suffrage Party highlighted notably Pauline Fredericks as Woman and Mrs Sybilla Pope and Mrs May Belle Morgan as ornaments in Greek robes.
In New York May Day 1920 thousands of suffragists marched eight abreast along Fifth Avenue led by the National Woman’s Party and allied groups. Bands played as 120 bluecoats lined the route and a yellow suffrage flag appeared with women in white, many in international costumes. The march issued a marshal’s order to keep silent and somber, then dispersed near Central Park and Carnegie Hall.
The House approved the Underwood tariff schedule for wool without amendments, voting 168 to 112. Republicans failed to pass a blanket substitute proposing 148 cent duty on raw wool. Democrats resisted a fight, advancing the broader tariff agenda.
