Villa issues telegram from Aguas Calientes after Celaya defeat. He declares retreat and says his forces are in excellent spirits and ready to meet Obregon. He claims 200 miles of territory south of Aguas Calientes now under his control and denies executing General Manuel Chao.
Allies wear a nose guard in trenches near Langemarck as German forces release gas shells. Soldiers exposed to chlorine cloud face asphyxiation. some escape, others die at posts. Germans push across canals and seize batteries as first line defenses fall back.
The American steamer Minnesota, aground at the entrance to the land sea of Japan since April 14, was finally floated today by dynamite. One workman was killed in the blast. Three prior attempts failed. The vessel will go to dry dock at Nagasaki.
Selma California May 1 The local fire department was in Fresno for a Raisin Day parade when a blaze swept the business district causing damage estimated at over $50,000. Fire crews hurried back to contain the flames.
China today rejected group V of Japan’s demands in full, presenting the note at a meeting with Japanese representatives. The rejected group sought Japanese personnel as political, financial, and military advisers, police control in key areas, and Japan’s supervision over arms, along with concessions for railway, mining, and harbor operations. The Chinese view of group V as more threatening follows Tokyo’s revised draft presented earlier.
Advices received by Alozco Perrera say General Victoriano Huerta will travel to San Antonio to meet former associates and friends on Mexico pacification matters. Perrera, a former Huerta staff colonel, reports Huerta’s expected arrival soon. Federico Gamboa and other Mexicans went to New York as Huerta seeks firsthand information on Mexican conditions.
Hydrographer M M Grant tours the Green River headwaters in Fremont County Wyoming. He highlights snowcapped peaks, deep lakes, clear water and abundant wildlife while detailing elevations, lake sizes, and the region’s irrigation potential.
In Shamokin Pennsylvania two masked men halted a rail car, struggled with the motorman, and fled with a satchel carrying $4500 sent by Eagle Sick Mill. They were captured later in Treverton by Attorney Andrew Shhoener and Detective Oliver Haupt. $1500 was found missing from the satchel. The suspects identified themselves as Milton Bitting and Fortom Neihart.
Seismograph at St Ignatius college in Cleveland records two shocks near 1:12 and 1:22 am. The quakes occurred 6 000 to 7 000 miles away, with the second shock nearly continuous for about forty five minutes. Authorities say it is the most violent in years.
President Wilson spent several hours in New York en route to Williamsburg Massachusetts to attend the christening of his grandson Francia Sayre. He was joined by Margaret Wilson, Cary T. Grayson, and Helen Woodrow.

Chicago reports 92 300 union workers on strike or sidelined with 1 200 iron workers joining the walkout. Carpenters, sheet metal workers, lathers and painters join amid a broad stoppage that may trigger wider labor action, while Pittsburg bricklayers halt work for higher wages and an eight hour day, affecting about 1 200 men.
Eleven persons died when the steamer Victoria wrecked near the Coronado islands eighteen miles southwest of San Diego. Six survivors were rescued after heroic efforts by the crew of the steamship American, which landed them today.
