Indicted Miners and Operators Named in Lever Act Probe

About 125 coal operators and miners from Illinois Indiana Ohio and western Pennsylvania were named in indictments by a federal grand jury. International President pou L. Lewis Secretary Treasurer William Green and Chief Statistician Percy Tetlow were listed among those indicted. John H. Lewis said the charges lack grounds and pledged to prove innocence.

Twelve Hours Day for Cheyenne Police After March

Cheyenne police notified that the 12 hour day would be restored for the force effective April 4. A majority of patrolmen reportedly said they would resign when informed. The force had been on an eight hour, three shift system. Return to twelve hours is described as an economy measure and the force will be limited to ten officers.

SINS WARNED FLETCHER OF POOR CONVOY SERVICE

Washington records show Rear Admiral William B Fletcher warned by Admiral Sims six weeks before his 1917 Brest removal that convoy forces gave inadequate attention to vessels off the French coast. Sims urged greater precision in convoy operations and protection of returning transports, noting attempts at remedy were limited. Fletcher said he urged changes but could not secure action and cited lack of confidence in his staff, Magruder.

Chinese Convicts Escape Shanghai Prison Revolt

One hundred fifty Chinese convicts escaped a provisional Shanghai prison on March 21 after a revolt that overpowered wardens and breached gates. Seven inmates were killed in the riot as police and soldiers pursued the escapees. 24 were captured so far.
