Suffrage Amendment Defeated Narrowly in Senate

Washington March 19 Women suffrage advocates failed to pass a constitutional amendment in the Senate by 35 to 34. Supporters hailed the narrow defeat as a sign of growing strength. Senator Shafroth attempted a new plan requiring state votes. Only three southern senators backed the measure. An attempted counter amendment to repeal the fifteenth or restrict to white women also failed.

Fire destroys Windsor hotel in Milwaukee blaze

Milwaukee March 19 Fire costing about 300000 destroyed the Windsor hotel and several lower floor businesses. Police and firefighters searched the ruins for possible bodies while guests on the fourth floor fled via a burning stairway. Elevator service ceased as wires burned, and survivors sheltered in the lobby across the street.

Kaiser Wilhelm Sinks Schooner in Dense Fog Collision

North German Lloyd liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse collided with an unidentified schooner in the North Sea amid dense fog.
