In Roanoke Virginia on March 17 Republicans selected four delegates at large and four alternates to back Frank O Lowden for president and instructed voting for Henry W Anderson as vice president. The move triggered a bitter clash with opponents seeking uninstructed delegates and a riot of cries and interruptions before a late vote.
Washington reports urgent state department notes to Bolivia cautions against disturbing South American peace amid La Paz anti Peruvian protests. Peru seeks US mediation as Chilean influence and arms flow cited. General Montes named as Bolivian anti-Peruvian leader.
Two delegates uninstructed and two pledged to vote for Leonard Wood were named at district conventions in Minnesota. F. H. Carpenter and W. J. Williamson were uninstructed delegates for the Fifth district in Minneapolis. In St. Paul Wood was indorsed with Herbert Keller and Leavitt Corning named for the Fourth district to Chicago. An effort to instruct Minneapolis delegates for Hiram W. Johnson failed. eight more district conventions were set for Friday. County conventions named uninstructed delegates to the state meeting in St. Paul where four at large delegates will be chosen for the national conventions.
Reinforcement of the Dutch guard at Van Bentinck s castle has turned the former emperor s refuge into a fortress. Sentries patrol the main gate and inner drives with multiple defensive lines. Only the Bentinck family and a few servants may enter.
Washington March 17 The irreconcilables teamed with Democrats to defeat a declaratory reservation aimed at pledging grave concern for any threats to Europe's peace. The measure went down 25 to 39 on roll call, clearing up the treaty fight as leaders plan a Friday vote on ratification and limit speeches to 45 minutes. About a dozen reservations remain, none expected to pass.
