Governor Carey declares the state cannot afford the capitol extension and sharply prunes appropriations. He vetoes the capitol addition and reduces general allocations while urging counties to stabilize finances amid tax burdens.
Edward Hillman and Mandel, large Chicago employers of thousands of women, announce plans to visit workers’ homes to verify conditions and ensure pay scales meet moral standards. Hillman cites average pay of $8.17 weekly for saleswomen and $3 for errand girls, with questions about responsibility and virtue arising during a vice commission hearing.
Judge Riner’s March 4 order allows sale of Penn Wyoming first mortgage bonds at one fourth par value. The Cheyenne master will auction properties at Encampment and nearby, with parcels or whole, to repay about 3 million in bonds. If purchased, reconstruction could revive Encampment and Wyoming investment, aided by Continental Trust bank of Chicago.
In Sonora the Huerta federal troops clash with initiate rebel forces at Nacasari, defending town held by 255 federals. About 540 rebels attacked. seven defenders died, an American, J. Williams Jr., wounded. Rebels cut wire, burned the Yzabel bridge. impending move toward Agua Prieta and other targets feared.
Extensive improvements in Cheyenne include expansion of the Union Pacific shops doubling local jobs, new Colorado & Southern facilities, Texas Oil storage tanks, and planned Tribune Thomas and Labor Journal buildings. The projects promise hundreds of new residents, a ramped railway presence, and a stronger irrigation and farming outlook for the region.
Los Angeles reports that Clarence Darrow’s jury on the jury bribery case could not agree. The panel stood eight for conviction and four for acquittal. Darrow contends for a new trial and argues the jury’s partial verdicts reflect prejudice from alleged statements by the McNamaras.
