Ties for Tracks One of Railroad Problems

Chicago June 22 An interesting sidelight on factors raising railroad operating costs was noted this week. More than 100 million cross ties are used annually by U S railroads. Hardwood timber scarcity has driven tie prices up from a few cents per tie to as high as 2 dollars, with estimates of a 200 million dollar yearly tie bill in five years. Railroads seek a secure timber supply, with Eucalyptus planted by the Santa Fe and others as a new source of ties.
