The state opens sale at 10 30 am at the Laramie county courthouse offering forty thousand acres near Cheyenne on favorable terms. Purchasers may pay one tenth down and one eighteenth of the remainder annually, with markets and schools promised in a growing city.
James C. Fargo resigns as American Express president after 33 years. George C. Taylor of Chicago named his successor.
George J. Kneeland, head of the American Go call Hygiene association department, told delegates that the main source of commercialized vice are girls aged 15 to 18. He argued these girls are largely intelligent, not feebleminded, and said many come from homes where idleness and laxity prevail.
The 26th Wyoming Consistory No 1 A A S R reunion held in Cheyenne saw 59 members take degrees from Fourth to Fourteenth. Leaders include Dr G L Strader W W Bond and William R Dubois of Cheyenne and Mayor C H M of Douglas. A Prince of Jerusalem and Knight Rose Croix rites featured with teams from Douglas and Laramie directing ceremonies. Banquet at Masonic Temple preceded the day’s final session and list of participants spans multiple towns including Cheyenne Rock Springs Torrington Cambria and more.
Greek refugees from Asia Minor describe a massacre in Phokia by armed Turks, killing priests and civilians, looting and burning homes, with 3800 Greeks fleeing to Salonika. Bodies reportedly dumped in wells as refugees arrive starved and wounded. In Durazzo, Muslim rebels near the palace trigger international fleet concerns.
Sulphur dust fell on Seward on June 16 fueling belief Mount Katmal near the Alaska peninsula is erupting again after an unusually dark day. Valdez reports say an earthquake was felt there.
Butte Montana remained quiet after two days of rioting as meetings ended without incident. Conservative and seceder factions held separate gatherings with 21 and 400 attendees respectively. Mayor Duncan closed saloons until Thursday and halted firearm sales while promising a compromise to prevent further trouble. He told President Wilson conditions did not merit troops.
More than 1,200 delegates filled the convention hall as the United Drug company opened its main annual session. Delegates from over thirty states gathered, spanning territory west of the Mississippi to Ohio, marking the largest and most extensive convention yet.
The English team won the international polo cup in the second game of a series with the United States at Meadow Brook Westbury on June 14. The final score was 4 to 23. Defenders mounted a strong effort but could not overcome the English squad.
Rome June 16 Italy, after a week of revolts in parts of the kingdom, appears back to a normal state. Work resumes gradually as the government studies measures to avoid a repetition of the crisis.
On May 23 Pinchot sent a long letter to national committee members Theodore Roosevelt and other leaders denouncing George W. Perkins as a menace to the party and urging his removal from the chair. The letter, marked Personal not for publication, revealed long percolating discontent with Perkins now taking definite form.
Washington June 16 President Wilson presses for the full program of anti trust legislation at the current session and the fall campaign near Senate leaders prepared to push all measures and adjourn in July. The Senate aims to finish all annual appropriation bills by month’s end and has advanced the diplomatic pension and Indian bills. Only the sundry civil and rivers and harbors bills remain after those.
The high school cadet corps began its annual hike into the Fort Russell maneuver reserve near Cheyenne. About 30 miles from Cheyenne, the first day covered 16 miles along the Happy Jack road to South Crow crossing. They will be gone ten days with four days spent marching to and from camp, preserving six days for fishing and hunting. Sergeant Caldwell accompanied the cadets.
Dominion commission testimony in Quebec confirms the Empress of Ireland was stationary when rammed by the Storstad on May 29. Owners of the collier claim the Ireland veered into the Storstad which had the right of way, clarifying cause and circumstances of the collision.
Weather notes show fair conditions in Wyoming on Wednesday with warmer southeast winds. Thursday brings another day of fair skies in Wyoming and cooler northeast portions, while eastern regions trend cooler.
Casper Wyoming June 16 The disappearance of Dr J Kamp Ford from in front of his home caused excitement. Two youths Smith and Ballinger employed at the South Side garage took a Cole car belonging to W D Waltman, manager Natrona Pipe Line, for a joy ride. The car crashed near Kimball ranch five miles east of town. the pair returned to town and checked into Berry hotel claiming an accident and departure. A note left at the garage indicated where the Cole car could be found. Dr Kamp found his car missing after returning from a call. thieves had swapped a Ford plug into the Kamp car showing knowledge of Ford mechanics and repairs, while both youths had vanished.
A deadly fire at the Peter Capallan boarding house in Millford Mass kills seven workers and injures dozens. The 1860 building lacked fire escapes and safety features, trapping occupants who fled via windows as flames spread quickly. Dozens are hospitalized. hundreds affected amid a tinder box blaze.
Portland Maine June 16 Mayor Oakley Curtis of Portland secured the Democratic nomination for governor at yesterdays primaries with returns in hand. Republican Governor William T Haines was renominated without opposition. The four Maine congressmen Daniel G McGillicuddy Asher G Hinds John A Peters and Frank H Guernsey faced opposition.
The San Francisco board of supervisors voted 10 to 7 against abolishing boxing, renewing the sport in the city. A prior attempt to ban four round permits narrowly failed by one vote after applicants engaged in the chamber discussions last week.
Washington reports an aborted Buffalo mediation as constitutionalists refuse armistice and demand a constitutionalist provisional president. Villa’s resignation rumor lingers. Laredo notes Villa may become Chihuahua governor, while forces move toward Zacatecas amid seizures by Villa supporters.
Washington reports Treasury agents prepared to pursue income tax dodgers. Commissioner Osborne says the focus will shift after next month’s income tax collections, with a general crackdown forthcoming.
