Chicago June 13 Roosevelt leads in delegate contests with eight from Missouri six for Taft, giving Taft twelve from Mississippi and Missouri plus two from North Carolina. The Republican National Committee awarded Roosevelt twelve delegates, Taft eighteen, as Dixon asserts Roosevelt will clinch the nomination.
Washington June 18 The conference report on the army appreciation bill was adopted by 27 to 24 in the Senate. It would retire Gen Leonard Wood from chief of staff next March and limit officers to ten years as a major factor in eligibility. The bill also reorganizes posts and personnel and sets four year enlistments. Debates centered on personal interests and the effect on army organization. Page 5 continues.
Washington June 13 The president opts for Senator Root to bear the duty of guiding the nation to war or peace. Root departs for Chicago to meet key decisions and advise on the path ahead.
