Hero of Lakes Napier Found Dead at 89 in St Joseph

Captain Joseph A Napier longtime Great Lakes sailor who saved 60 lives died in his bed in St Joseph Michigan at age 89. In 1851 he rescued 31 aboard the Merchant after a foundering near Chicago and in 1877 Congress awarded a medal for bravery in the B W Mame wreck rescue. The effort left him with a spinal injury and permanent disability.
