Pope Praises American Choir as Flag Is Carried in Rome

Rome June 6 Pope Pius X praised a foreign church choir trained under his reform plan for church music. For the first time in Rome an American flag led a parade to the Scala Regia with Swiss guard honors as the choir performed Ave Maria Stella. The pope conferred the cantorum degree on Father Finn and praised the boys for singing like angels. He also invited the Cecilian academy to train their choir to match the Americans' performance. He tenderly caressed the youngest boys and asked to photo with them, insisting the flag be present.
