Lemberg dispatch reports Bolshevik officers admit the present offensive is a final effort unlikely to last beyond a fortnight. Reds are described as demoralized and discouraged amid ongoing fighting.
Reds evacuated Grodno after Bolshevik capture of Grodno forts on the Nieman south bank. South of the Pripet the communication says troops counter attacked driving the enemy from Rzezytsa Kachuka Vola and Jeziercy. The enemy remains passive along the Styr line south of this region after heavy losses in fruitless assaults. Battles with cavalry near Grodno turn favorable in the Dubno area as large enemy forces crossing the Shyhara near Clonim press near Rozany.
Berlin July 24. President Ebert orders constitutional emergency actions to defend East Prussia amid Russo Polish fighting near the East Russian border. Civil governor says attack unlikely but developments are closely watched. troop entry requires inter allied approval.
An unofficial tally from 189 Texas towns shows Joseph W. Bailey leading with 17,575 votes, ahead of P. M. Neff who trails by 1,847 in the Democratic gubernatorial contest. Robert E. Thomas follows, with B. F. Looney fourth on 6,848 votes.
Indianapolis July 24 John L. Lewis president of the United Mine Workers warned that any settlement of the Illinois field strike that alters the interstate agreement could trigger a nationwide shutdown of all Central field bituminous mines. He said the move would involve about 210000 miners unless national officers act to enforce an immediate stoppage.

Cody, Wyoming July 28 E L Bridgeford used superhuman strength and calmness to hold a light automobile submerged at the river bottom ten feet deep until he could free his wife. He braced beneath the car as it sank then swam to the surface to rescue her, both clinging to a log until reaching shore.
A bandit with a rifle robbed a Merced to Yosemite stage near Cedarbrook and Miami Lodge around 1 p.m. July 23, taking $850 after forcing a passenger to pass a bag along the line. He wore blue overalls and a white mask and fled on foot. touring cars nearby were not bothered.
Cheyenne prepares for the twenty fourth Frontier Days carnival with flags from many nations, elaborate decorations, and colorful lights. Cowboys in bright shirts and high heeled boots dominate streets as crowds gather, with park preparations, corrals, whitewashed fences, and a ready program for Tuesday afternoon.
Dayton Ohio July 24 a proposed change moves the nomination notice for Governor Cox from Trails End near Dayton to the Montgomery County fair grounds to accommodate crowds and provide streetcar access. An arrangements committee reviews details with Cox and a formal announcement is expected next week while he plans western travel and speeches in Kentucky Ohio and the central eastern states.
Floyd Cox who escaped from the state penitentiary in Rawlins eighteen months ago after serving a year of a six year sentence for burglary has been recaptured in Oklahoma and brought back to Rawlins. Six months into his escape Cox was recaptured but escaped again from the officer transporting him. Three other convicts fled with him but were quickly caught.
Sir Thomas Lipton reacts to the regatta postponement after ambulatory concerns for crew safety aboard the Victoria. Captain Burton and Yachting Master Neil advise amid heavy seas as Lipton vows to resume racing Monday.
Mayor Ed P Taylor announced during Frontier Week the city will deploy a crew each morning at 8 80 to wash streets and sidewalks in the business district The plan includes moving empty containers to convenient spots for early disposal and thorough sanitary policing of the carnival area Crows will work until noon.
Sheriff reports L. J. Robinson fled Rawlins penitentiary after serving seven to ten years for stealing David Howell's car. It marks the third Laramie county escape in six months, with William Smith and William Loftus previously eluding recapture. Robinson was known in Cheyenne as Jack and had worked at the Dildine garage.
BASIN Wyo July 24 thirty eight head of army cavalry horses have arrived here for the use of Troop A Wyoming national guard.
Inmates at the Bedford New York state reformatory for women staged a major riot starting in the laundry and spreading to all cottages. About 150 participated, with knives and flatirons used as weapons. Troopers and police restored order as several inmates were injured and three escaped. Superintendent Florence Jones resigned amid the unrest.
In Thermopolis Wyoming on July 23 H B Morgan of Hot Springs Light & Power survived a near fatal electric shock when a few thousand volts passed through his body. A man named Miller slipped on a damp floor at the power house and touched a high tension wire. His fall broke the short circuit and is credited with saving the life. Morgan remains in serious condition but is expected to recover.
The American Farm Bureau Federation finished its session by approving a livestock co operative marketing plan and receiving the grain plan favorably. A permanent grain committee based in Chicago will study existing schemes and seek new ideas with J R Howard leading it. The federation aims to secure freight cars, push uniform rates, praise the FTC, and support deep waterway projects. U S Grain Growers signaled an August Columbus convention.
Miss Mollie Collins of Kemmerer armed with a .45 revolver intercepted fugitive Dutch Miller at midnight in Kemmerer. Miller, 22, suspected of burglarizing the Dave Nelson home for $700, was brought back to Lincoln County jail with Miller held as the suspect and Mrs H R Soaper as a witness.
