News from Paris July 22 reports great smoke columns and detonations as Germans retreat northward from the Rhéims pocket while French and Allied forces advance on the Schweppes front. Reports note French gains near Soissons and Villemontoire with German counterattacks suffering heavy losses as rail lines are disrupted.
Paris reports heavy German counter attacks aimed at halting Allied progress between the Marne and La Crois and the Graillon region with further German gains cited. Vienna July 22 The war office reports renewed enemy attacks north of Berat and in the upper Devoli valley. Despite local fluctuations the foe gained no lasting advantage as reconnoitering detachments probed Malian positions between the Bemini bend and the sea.

American troops advance east of Chateau Thierry, crossing the Marne and capturing the Wood of Barbillon as German divisions rush northward to stem the Allied advance.
