Resolute, defending the America’s Cup, beat Shamrock VI by handicap time in a tense 80 mile race near Sandy Hook New Jersey. Shamrock led by 19 seconds at the start but Resolute won by 7 minutes 1 second overall as the fourth race is set for Friday.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democratic vice presidential nominee, said the peace treaty and the league of nations are not fixed issues and their status could change before March 4. He spoke after returning from the Democratic National Committee meeting in Columbus. He predicted Governor Cox would outline his stance on the treaty in his notification address. A prominent Democrat noted Wilson and Cox agreed on broad treaty aims but did not discuss details or reservations.
Senator Harding announced he would use his influence to support ratification of the equal suffrage amendment, urging Tennessee Republicans to vote for it. He met with National American Woman Suffrage Association representatives to convey the message to Carrie Chapman Catt in Nashville.
Cheyenne crowds will enjoy a pew thriller this Frontier season as twenty hybrid Brahman cattle, imported from Texas by Holdy McCarty, join the show. White Neut Col John H Hunt faces court martial for neglect of duty tied to Grover Bergdoll escape. Irvine Bergdoll, sought on similar charges, surrendered at Governor's Island with companion James Romig. Irvine jailed at Castle William. Romig and Mrs Bergdoll linked to Bergdoll escape case.
Evidence was offered to show Ludwig A. K. Martens did not conduct himself as a diplomat despite claiming status. The hearing in his deportation case was adjourned to July 28 to permit witnesses on alleged extradiplomatic activities.
Dublin reports a possible cabinet backed settlement basis for the Irish question. An eminent Sinn Fein connected ecclesiastic said he received credentials suggesting cabinet origin and submitted them to Arthur Griffith. Sinn Feiners insist they will not negotiate.
John C. Fleming is appointed manager of the Cheyenne Leader and Sunday Leader. He brings twenty years of experience at the Wyoming State Tribune and Cheyenne State Leader, rising from newsboy to advertising solicitor and assistant manager. William J. Bryan was nominated by acclamation at the Prohibition Party national convention in Lincoln Nebraska on Wednesday after a telegram showing he could not accept. The move surprised many as nominations had not been scheduled and followed a push from Minnesota’s W G Calderwood and opposition led by Clinton N Howard of New York.
In Pueblo on July 21 Mrs Milly McKenzie of Utah and her nurse Sibyl Boraz were killed when struck by a Denver and Rio Grande passenger train as they walked along the tracks. McKenzie reportedly ran toward the oncoming train to save her, with Boraz attempting to pull her away.
Funeral services for WHC Biddle will be held at the Harry Bricker Brothers' parlors at 3 30 p m today. Interment follows at Lakeview cemetery with Rev C I Fisher in charge.
Washington July 21 Milk and passenger transport costs will share the rail rate increase sought from the Interstate Commerce Commission to offset the $600 million yearly expense from the labor board wage award. A B Thom said executives aim to spread the new charge across passenger and freight traffic with priority on passenger travel and Pullman charges.
Chicago reports show union leaders split after the U S railway labor board refused a rehearing on the 660 million wage award. About 1.8 million railroad workers await a referendum with no union guidance as strikes begin to emerge in cities including Chicago.
Columbus report on Democratic planning as Governor Cox and George White map the campaign. Women’s bureau chair Mrs Bass outlines 100 women speakers and a push for feminine ballot while a special democratic committee forms. Notification dates set for August 7 and 9 for Cox and Roosevelt with tours to follow.
