The United Mine Workers district constitutional convention adjourned as the scale committee began sessions to draft a two year agreement with operators. A plan for boys and girls clubs was adopted to promote education among youth with guidelines on club membership rooms and activities.
President Wilson spoke to 700 postmasters in Washington about service and selflessness as core to his political faith. He praised Burleson for expanding postal service and urged postmasters to cooperate with the labor department to create a free employment bureau in every town.
In Denver and Boston dispatches, a New York expert argues that advertising is key to enlarging bank profits. He says newspapers win trust, banks must serve customers, and mutual interests aid both sides, citing James J. Hill and farmer banker cooperation programs such as the North Carolina pig club and Idaho beet growers. Resolutions protesting Sir Roger Casement’s execution were adopted by the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Boston.

London reports a strong German counter offensive on the British front failed while Russian attacks resumed on the eastern fronts. British and French forces renewed the Somme offensive, with heavy fighting around Armet and Fromelles and Russian actions along the Carpathians and Riga sectors.
Senator La Follette renewed his fight against the naval bill in a seven hour speech arguing Wall Street influence behind a larger armed fleet. The Senate rejected an amendment barring navy use to collect private debts, and a Norris substitute. He warned that a big program would trigger a global arms race and substantial taxation.
A man and a boy were killed by a shark at Matawan Creek near New York Bay. The incident shocks long time swimmers who have bathed there for generations. A display shows a twelve foot great white shark at the Hoglkyu Institute of Arts and Gelecoceile. Experts warn such sharks could devastate Atlantic coast bathing trade.
