Kawachi Battleship Sinks After Explosion in Port

Tokyo reports the Japanese battleship Kawachi of 21 420 tons sank in Tokoyama Bay on July 12 after a blast. About 500 crew members perished. Built in 1912 the vessel measured 200 feet in length with a 84 foot beam and a 28 foot draft.

Mooney Committed to Penitentiary by Judge Griffin

Thomas J. Mooney was committed by Superior Judge Franklin A. Griffin to San Quentin for execution on Friday 24, 1914, after his murder conviction on a day of preparedness. Italians Make Gains in Brenta Region Front

Rome July 16 The Italian war office reports lively fighting in the Grappa area with Italian detachments gaining ground. Ninety four Austro Hungarian troops and seven machine guns fell to Italian forces. Across the Brenna hills two Austro Hungarian corps were driven back and a number of prisoners were taken. Continuous shelling and air activity with twelve enemy machines brought down.

Berlin says on the Meroe front the German official statement reports violent counter attacks. It claims 13,000 Entente prisoners captured during one day. The army under General von Howe crossed the Marne between Jaulgonne and Dormane amid fierce fighting.
