The Wyoming National Guard is to be called into federal service on July 25, after earlier plans to deploy to American Lake Washington and Palo Alto near San Francisco. Governors protested changes due to soldiers’ job commitments while supply delays were reported.
Reporting from Washington on July 4 describes dispatches from France being diverted by official order to the Secretary of War for approval. No law enacted but officials request confidentiality. some letters were redirected to officials and edited before release to the press.
Special to The State Leader from Washington July 4. Senator Kendrick announces Wyoming will be included under the 640 acre land act if a new designation law is passed. He seeks swift legislative action through House and Senate conferees on the agricultural stimulation bill to extend designation plans. Western senators push for early survey funding and swift completion to aid homesteaders awaiting land under the 640 acre rule.
Sheriff George Nixon of Castle Rock Colorado arrived in Cheyenne in search of a stolen automobile reported missing yesterday morning. He did not locate the vehicle during his visit.
The unsuccessful submarine attacks on American expedition ships revive spy talk in the capital. Debate centers on whether Germans had warning of the crossing time. Some say the attack was predictable given public knowledge of the expedition.
Vienna reports that Austrian troops withdrew from a limited Galicia front under pressure from superior enemy forces. The war office says Russian attacks near Kenneuhy were repulsed and Moscow halted the assault.
About 6000 people attended the final day of the Round-up in Pine Bluffs Wyoming with a Union Pacific train from Cheyenne bringing hundreds more. Speakers John Hey Rock Springs Judge Winter Casper and Judge Mentzer Cheyenne emphasized patriotism and the war aims. The program included wild west stunts, a three troop cavalry hurdle race, and an exhibition drill as Fort Russell troops prepared to depart for Fort Oglethorpe.
In Laramie on July 4 a crowd of about 8000 watched the Denver Laramie road race. Bob Murray of Denver, piloting a Buick, won but did not surpass Harold Brinker of Cheyenne’s record time of 2:55:10 set last year. Brinker’s 1903 time was 3:08:30. Second place went to Cliff Sundin of Rawlins, third to George Edwards of Denver, and fourth to C. M. Duncan of Denver. four others finished after detours and rough roads. A Cheyenne to Laramie motorcycle race was won by Frank Kunce of Loveland on a Harley Davidson with 1:14 time.
Troops from Britain, France, Brazil, and the United States marched through Rio de Janeiro in a Natal Day parade. Admiral Caperton led American squadrons with Brazilian battalions and French and British detachments participating. Robert T. Skinner, U.S. consul general in Britain, praised England’s tributes to America at a patriotic concert.
In Handelkade a mob of starving women stormed a cold storage warehouse and seized pig carcasses, distributing them as butcher shops were plundered. Soldiers and police moved in to quell the disturbance and clear the street.
In Amsterdam four youths died and 19 were injured when police and troops opened fire on a mob that looted shops after a parade. The incident followed orders from police during the event.
German submarine bombarded PORTA DELGADA Azores at dawn. A little girl was killed and several others injured. The port replied to the bombardment as an American transport joined the firing on the Gorton submarine, per the official announcement.
The State Leader notes that only four areas ran today due to shortened working hours for part of the force during yesterday’s holiday.
New York officials order suspension of a police neglect inquiry into the death of a Cruger High School girl. Mayor Mitchel directs Attorney Swann to halt and cease the investigation per General Whitman's instructions.
The Chinese national sought asylum and was granted refuge by Japan. Attendants accompanied him at the palace compound. No interviews with the president are permitted.
The government states the practice is temporary and will not continue long. The War department faced an overwhelming workload causing delays in dispatches, but assurances claim the procedure is only temporary and the downtrodden censorship will not be prolonged.
The Metal Mine Workers branch of the IWW in Lag Arizona demands federal action after threatening to stay off the job despite International Union pressure. Governor Campbell says the dispute fuels bitterness between rival unions and could require government intervention to calm the strike.
