Defendants Patten Seales Hayne and Brown faced eight counts alleging planned price manipulation on the New York Stock Exchange and cotton futures to reap up to 10 million dollars.
Former Laramie county commissioner W G Curtis died in Long Beach California at about age 60. Though not a Cheyenne resident he was well known here for his Torrington connection and service in the state legislature and as a prominent Mason. He had long suffered heart trouble and had been unable to attend duties for eight months. He is survived by his wife a daughter Mrs Root and three grandchildren with the family home in Torrington and ranch near the city.

Gov Carey appoints V. J. Tidball of Laramie to succeed the late Charles E. Carpenter as judge of the Second Judicial district. Tidball, a Wyoming native bred, will take the bench after oath filing. he has served on the Wyoming University board of trustees and holds degrees from the University of Wyoming and the University of Michigan. His term lasts until the 1914 general election.
Governor Donaghey appointed J. N. Heiskell of Little Rock editor of the Arkansas Gazette to fill the U S Senate seat of the late Jeff Davis whose term would have ended March 4. Heiskell becomes senator after Davis's death in office.
New York January 6 report on a Herald test comparing parcel post and express services from cities including Boston Philadelphia Chicago New Orleans. Parcel post edged express in some routes while express won others. costs ranged from 6 to 26 cents with times from hours to more than a day.
