Spain Quickly Quells Revolt

Executions Reported in Ghent Spy Case

Twenty two persons including four from Antwerp and eight from Ghent were executed by German authorities in Ghent on December 20 for alleged espionage. A Dutch skipper was among the condemned. Three other Dutchmen received prison terms of three, four and ten years, with many Belgians also given long sentences.

Col Elmer Lindsley testified that the supplies committee of the council of national defense caused shortages in army clothing. William Bianchi charged a wool shortage scare was created to push wool shoddy into uniforms and accused Charles Eisenman of stirring a manufactured scare.
