Good Road Expert King to Lecture Here on Roads

Highway specialist William H. Seed spoke at the Industrial club detailing how good roads boost business and urging county officials to supervise road work efficiently. He highlighted Iowa’s cross-state highway effort and noted Mr. King will lecture locally with dates in Cheyenne set for March 25 or 26 during a state dry farm convention.

Prisoners Safe After Pen Fire In Montreal

Fire at St Vincent de Pauls penitentiary annex destroyed facilities and damaged surgical rooms. About 350 prisoners were moved to the main building with no fatalities reported though earlier fears of inmates escaping arose. Nearby Bath Histed reports $100,000 in losses.

Louisiana sugar men must pace competition

Washington February 26 Cuban sugar is allowed into the United States under the reciprocity treaty with a duty 20 percent lower than other sugars. The opinion by Attorney General McReynolds ends the second round of the sugar growers fight to maintain the duty.

Engineer Dies High in Air Descent

In San Francisco on February 26 aviator H W Blakely fought a 6000 foot descent after his engine failed near the bay returning from Cloverdale. He spiraled the biplane to the water then jumped from the aircraft as a tug captain towed the craft ashore.

Washington February 26 Senate Interstate Commerce panel held its first hearing on creating an Interstate Trade Commission. Chamber of Commerce members discussed the bill while House Judiciary and Interstate Commerce committees heard arguments to regulate holding companies curb railroad securities and shorten Sherman act procedures.

Fire destroys Henry Detmer piano factory in Chicago

A blaze on North Claremont avenue in Chicago today wiped out the Henry Detmer piano factory, causing about $50,000 in damage. The fire occurred near St Elizabeth's hospital but storm windows prevented danger to patients. Mass continued in a church adjoining the building as the crowd watched.

Girl recounts escape amid strike violence at Ludlow camp

Miss Anna Cameron testified before congressional investigators describing John R Lawson as a leader with a loaded revolver who escorted her from the Ludlow tent colony on October 25. She said Lawson’s followers surrounded the camp armed, while stage drivers feared to pass. Previous testimony cited urging miners to buy rifles and attack. A preliminary trip to copper mines is planned, with dispute over a miner to accompany the committee resolved. Commiteeman Casey is among those expected to join the expedition.

De Palma Wins Vanderbilt Cup at Santa Monica

Ralph De Palma defeated Barney Oldfield by a narrow margin in the 294 mile Second Vanderbilt Cup at Santa Monica. De Palma averaged 76.4 mph on a course record pace but finished just over a minute ahead with six teens cars starting and five finishing amid a spectator throng and one minor accident.

A Villa conference with American consul Leteler approved a 16 American and two British representatives plus a medical examiner to investigate Benton’s death. Reports from Washington say President Wilson opposed US marines or armed force into Mexico without consent of governing parties.

Prohibition Drive Forms 6 Squadron Alliance

In Indianapolis on February 24 a new movement for national prohibition, led by J. Frank Tinully as former governor of Indiana, was announced. Eugene Chafiio and others including Dr. Irene Handelth of Nashville and Danet A. Pablug joined the effort under the banner of the Mevetoot squadron, promising to act for prohibition and not align with any party or special interest.
