Washington reports a government study of 21 Southern cotton mill families in 1908 showing annual incomes often below $1,000 with debt at year end. Families average 8.5 members with 3.6 wage earners, diets heavy on corn bread and pork, and widespread disease.
Hon. W. J. Bryan lands in Cheyenne at 8:35 this morning and plans two speeches in Denver yesterday, a noontime reception at the Plaing hotel, an informal banquet with about one hundred guests, and a 11 o clock address at the First Presbyterian church before continuing west on No. Three to Salt Lake for another grand speech.
Kilgore, a policeman, got drunk in the Tivoli saloon and fired at a whisky bottle. A bullet shattered the bar glass and lodged in the bartender’s hand as Officer Merrill attempted arrest. Kilgore is dishonorably discharged and Mayor Breanahan ordered immediate dismissal for any officer seen drinking on duty.
Denver was told on February 23 that William Jennings Bryan would not seek the presidency again. He said he would support a strong Democrat and noted that Roosevelt’s third term is a possible issue.
Permanent organization of the Champ Clark Democratic club was formed at Albany convention hall Denver Feb. 23. C P Manby elected president C G Pitschke secretary J B Gordon treasurer and a list of vice presidents and an executive committee. The group aims to promote Champ Clark for the presidential nomination and coordinate Colorado delegation actions. Headquarters at 820 Foster Building.
Mike Gibbons of St Paul knocked out Willie Lewis of New York in the second round of a scheduled ten round bout in New York City. The victory came Feb 23 as Gibbons claimed a decisive knockout.
Carson Nev Feb 23 The extraordinary session called by Governor Od d le met today to regulate financial laws. Both houses passed a resolution reducing attaches to about half the usual number. Republicans run the assembly and Democrats the senate. The session is expected to last ten days.
LeRoy T. Vernon, Washington correspondent for the Chicago Daily News, was appointed chief of the publicity bureau at Taft headquarters in Washington D C today confirming a leadership change within the campaign operation.
Aurora W Clement filed for divorce from Rev Henry Harmon Clement rector of Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church Denver alleging infidelity. The complaint names a co respondent and two young women tied to the minister. Clement is said to deny the accusations and Bishop Olmsted has unfrocked him. The suit is not to be contested.
In Weld County Colorado Ernest Minkwitz once spanked a young Theodore Roosevelt when they lived in Germany. Minkwitz, a former chemist at West Sugar factory, married Ada Smith in Kansas City after meeting Roosevelt again in Colorado. Roosevelt recalled the incident and laughed, saying he deserved the spanking.
Stanley Valentine Von Kennel 16 died at 416 West 26th Street at 10 20 last night after spinal trouble. Son of J M Von Kennell, he attended the sixth grade at the local school and is survived by two brothers two sisters and his parents. Funeral arrangements are pending.
The Chamber of Deputies approved the annexation of Tripoli by Italy by 431 to 38 votes. The decision drew enthusiastic cheering from the chamber and galleries while opponents were hissed.
President Taft, addressing a Naval League meeting in Washington, argues two battleships are essential to keep the United States on a strong naval footing. Admiral Wainwright adds that the Spanish-American War might have been avoided with additional battleships.
The Colorado Retail Hardware and Implement Dealers association for Colorado Wyoming and New Mexico closed its annual meeting in Denver with officers elected. President J F Jones Denver. RooseVelt begins a three day journey to Boston with no disclosed plans. He will respond to a Western governor on the presidential nomination during his absence, likely Monday. He made no brief remarks to forty Young Australia League members visiting the county.
In New York on February 28 the police solved eight infant deaths at the Brooklyn Infants' Hospital after Winifred Ankers, a hospital kitchen worker, confessed to adding oxalic acid to babies' milk bottles. She said the poison was meant to get even with nurses she disputed with and was formally arrested tonight.
The federal and county grand juries renewed the dynamite conspiracy investigation in Los Angeles. John R. Harrington of Chicago, once tied to the McNamara defense, faces contempt charges for refusing to answer questions about influencing state witnesses and is ordered back before the county grand jury Monday as federal agents await further notice.
Oklahoma City February 23. The Democratic state convention ends with a split national delegation plan. Twenty at large delegates were chosen with half votes each, ten pledged to Clark and ten to Wilson, with instructions to divide Oklahoma’s vote while both candidates remain. Roger Galbreath of Tulea elected national committeeman.
Mayor Kelley and a El Paso delegation appealed to Secretary Stimson for American troops to protect Juarez. Stimson said intervention not possible while El Paso lives and property were at risk. Reports say Trevino and Orozco may join forces to threaten Mexico City, isolating the capital from the United States.
Right of way secured a three quarter mile line to a limestone deposit in the hills. Murray of Colorado & Southern has workers opening the quarry and plans to build a track to it. The rock will supply Northern Colorado sugar factories, each using 40 to 50 tons daily, with potential for a large local industry.
Washington reports the Colombian government urges Secretary Knox to visit Colombia during his South and Central America tour. The request reflects Colombia wanting high level talks with the United States on regional issues.
Philadelphia reports Representative Oscar W. Underwood of Alabama, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, warning the nation against dictatorship. He praised George Washington as a moderating example and urged restraint in enacting new financial and economic laws while criticizing sensationalism and centralization in government.
