Labor department reports show unemployment rising in the last week with 270,827 people out of work. The own employment belt spans from New England to the Pacific coast and conditions are most serious in Cleveland where 70,000 workers are idle.
Governor Carey received word from Washington that the 116th Wyoming unit including hundreds of Wyoming men and medical troops will reach Newport News Virginia within days. The ship left a French port on February 6 carrying 623 Wyoming men. The governor plans no welcome committee at the port but may arrange a later greeting when feasible. Demobilization timing remains unsettled and reports of additional Wyoming troops arriving this week are deemed likely inaccurate.
British and American forces began an attack at dawn against Bolsheviks along the Petrograd road. Archangel reports infantry advances after artillery bombardment to protect an American position at Sredinkenka about 30 miles east, with no final result reported.
London report on February 8 describes concern from the supreme inter allied war council over German Poland relations. Germany denies Foch demands and mobilizes east troops, while talks in Paris consider armistice terms and possible occupation of Danzig and rail links. Negotiations continue as Polish forces prepare storming troops for Silesia and a ceasefire is arranged.
In Plattsville Wisconsin the Equ ity building collapse after a fire killed three firemen and 17 year old Edward Ratzell. Seattle 65 000 workers idle as union leaders weigh ending the general strike. Mayor Hansen threatens essential-industry operation, opens jitney service and municipal lines. Army patrols patrol streets as Tacoma normalizes and Butte miners face continued strike actions.
Protests greet Governor Carey and Secretary Powers during a visit to Sheridan. Wyoming officials and local ministers voiced concern over national policy just as telegrams from supporters and critics circulated in the crowd.
A Sotel statement from Paris reports the League of Nations commission meeting at the Hotel De Crition with steady accord. Only a few d r e a d i l e s of the draft remain for formal presentation and some provisions may be reopened for discussion before the final report to the conference. MM. Pusat t was named to represent Italy on the secretariat and the drafting committee will reconvene Monday morning.
Weimar February 8 Dr Edward Duard David longtime leader of the German Social Democratic Party was nearly unanimously chosen president of the German national assembly. He serves as under secretary of state for foreign affairs. A Friday dispatch wrongly named Carl Kautaky as president. Kautaky is an Independent Socialist at the Dern conference.
Senator Kenyon derides wasteful practices as the war revenue bill seeks six billion dollars in taxes this year and steady annual increases. Debate centers on road construction funding and child labor provisions while opposition targets minor amendments and future fiscal needs.
In New York a dinner for the American committee for the independence of Armenia featured Charles F. Hughes and William Jennings Bryan declaring Armenians capable of self government. They argued the U S should avoid a protectorate role in Armenia and focus on hemispheric duties. A pageant celebrated Armenian history amid messages from President Wilson and allied leaders.
Mrs Ariel Alferetta Jones aged about 20 died at the hospital after a brief illness while her husband, a soldier aboard the US service, was set to embark with his division. Her body lies at the undertaking parlors of Vugkfelt and Pinkbitier, embalmed and awaiting Sergeant Jon from France. Fifty new cages of onions were reported yesterday.
Wallingham Washington reports a mysterious accident at sea where eight to ten crew members were washed overboard from a fishing boat traveling from a plant on Kinza Island. The vessel carried about persons, nearly all from the Kinza Island plant, and was driven miles out to sea.
J Heney told the agriculture committee that Armou tried to buy him off with more business than he could handle. The offer, allegedly arranged by Lety Mayer of Ariat & Co., was discussed during the senate investigation sessions.
