Hudson's Bay Company Territorial Empire Shrinks Amid Selloff
Winnipeg reports the Hudson's Bay Company plans to close out its vast Dominion lands to farm settlers. The royal charter once granted sweeping control from Arctic shores to California and the Rocky Mountains, but in 1870 the company surrendered authority while retaining a fertile belt between the North Saskatchewan and Lake Winnipeg. As settlers take over, the old empire fades from North American maps.
