Strike Averted as Engineers Win 10 1 3 Percent Raise

Chicago December 24 The wage dispute between the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and sixty one railroads ends with no strike and an average raise of 10 1 3 percent over the 1910 scale. The package yields about 192 dollars per man annually for 33 000 engineers plus 40 cent daily base raise and engine differentials for various locomotive types. Grand Chief Stone cites avoiding strike turmoil as key, following United States Commissioner Neill's proposal.

Thrills Fill Opening Day of International Aviation Meet

Crowds packed Los Angeles for the second annual international aviation meet as spirals and dips tested pilots. A rival Wright team sparked a fierce race between Glenn Curtiss and FP O Parmalee, with Arch Hoxey forced down after reaching a high altitude and Walter Brookins delivering a two thousand foot glide. Curtiss also posted speeds over sixty miles per hour in a test.

Wreckage of Grace’s Aeroplane Reported Found

Amsterdam reports wreckage believed to be Cecil Grace’s aeroplane found in the North Sea near Texel. Grace vanished Thursday while attempting a Calais to Dover return, last seen off Goodwin sands at 3 pm headed toward land but veered northeast into the sea.

Albany Dec 24 report from the state forest and game department shows hunters started twenty six fires in the Adirondacks burning about 1100 acres. Carelessness by campers caused twenty three fires burning 1954 acres of forest land in the same period.

A coal mine abandoned fifty years ago collapsed in Washington Pennsylvania injuring John A. Sten, vice president, and twelve workers severely. About twenty other employees escaped unharmed as walls and machinery tumbled into the old mine shafting. Sections of the building plunged 160 feet to the mine base. total loss estimated at $75,000.

Two trains carrying 1,300 troops left Chihuahua to reinforce General Navarro with a mission to seize Mal Paso. An Associated Press observer says Navarro has fallen back to defense but plans to crush the revolt in four months, aided by a 2,000-man force and artillery. Scappold Collapse Injures Six Men At Packer Building

In Trinidad Colorado on December 24 six workers were hurt when a scaffold on the Packer building collapsed from about twenty feet. Meddling and Montgomery endured serious injuries with broken legs and back and a broken thigh. Harecroft broke a leg. Mulford suffered a dislocated shoulder. Simpson sprained his wrist and injured his face. Crough had widespread body injuries. Meddling and Montgomery were hospitalized in serious condition. others were sent home.
