An immense gas explosion in the Grand Central auxiliary power house shakes Manhattan. Ten dead, 125 injured, and $2,000,000 in damage reported. Four workers missing, traffic halted, investigation under way. Fire Chief Croker attributes the blast to illuminating gas and possible electric spark.
A Cheyenne report from Laramie claims a wedding on October 6 between Arthur F. Woodard and Marie Johnston may trigger bigamy charges. Johnston allegedly had a living husband, undivorced, while Woodard has asked Laramie court to annul the ceremony.
Judge C N Potter of the Industrial club disclosed that Cheyenne may host a two day aviation show in January. An association plans three French heavier than air flyers to perform lights in the air and require 6500 in gate receipts for both days plus all expenses beyond that. The Industrial club will not assume responsibility and seeks a promoter to advance the proposal.
Reports from Port Linon Costa Rica Dec 19 say five hundred lives perished as a strong quake near San Salvador islands triggered island sinking. Vessels returning with word that several populous islets disappeared beneath the ocean and inhabitants failed to escape in the chaos. Additional tremors were felt in San Jose and at Santa Clara college observatory recorded a quake at 6 gclock.
Sheridan Wyoming December 19 A Polish miner Jack Warracz froze on a Tongue River railroad bridge as a passenger train approached He ran into the train and was hurled fifteen feet into the air dying beside the track He had cleared the bridge and could have jumped to either embankment before the tragedy occurred.
Dr. F C Thornburg alerted Rev Crothers as worshipers prayed at the Methodist church in Maron Missouri yesterday. The roof burned fiercely and the church was a total loss within ten minutes.
A large crowd packed Eagle's hall for a Cheyenne Athletic Club boxing card headlined by Young Erlenborn of Denver versus Kid Rogs of New York. Rogs dominated early, Erlenborn rallied through ten rounds, but Rogs finished strong in the eleventh to win by knockout.
The Wyoming Legislature will meet in January to consider new laws and county division bills. Gov. Garey may recommend new men or measures, and a U S senator will be elected. A State Leader writer will report proceedings candidly from the inside, with fearless editorials to follow.
Construction begins on the Wellington to Cheyenne link of the Hill rail system with Kilpatrick Construction directing from Keefe building offices in Well ington Colorado. Sub contractors gather as equipment is staged and two miles of grading planned ahead of a July 31 1911 deadline. Civil Engineer Cowan Hooper of Colorado Southern and Dan Griffin Kilpatrick GM arrived to supervise the project.
Denver dispatch reports rescuers probing Leyden mine wreckage for five of ten trapped liners. Workers found a tunnel with blasting buckets and air readings. two men escaped the collapse and may still be alive as crews push toward the deeper sections.
A contest filed in Newcastle Wyoming challenges R B Mackney's democratic sheriff elect victory. Allegations claim unlawful voting by nonresidents at Boyd precinct, polls left open past closing time, and missing voter oath. If sustained it could overturn Mackney and affect Houx and Schmidt contests.
In Washington on December 19 Edward Douglas White was elevated from associate justice to chief justice of the U S Supreme Court. Harlan administered the oath as White held the century old Bible and took the oath with solemn, unostentatious ceremony.
United States Senator James B. Frazier of Tennessee declared he did not sign the senate privileges and elections sub committee report clearing Lorimer of scandal. He released a separate statement asserting seven tainted votes in Illinois legislature helped Lorimer win. Frazier said four Illinois lawmakers were bribed by three others who voted for Lorimer.
Christmas exercises will be held in Cheyenne public schools next Friday with varying grade participation. The term ends for a 17 day vacation and resumes Monday January 9 2011. Eighth grade at Central led by Miss McCormick. West Side hosts two programs for fifth and sixth grades with Misses Haynes and Hinkston. first grade under Miss Babcock. South Side programs by first and second grades under Misses Dobbyn and Cole. East Side first grade directed by Miss Hwers. Other grades lacking a program will observe Washingtons birthday or another holiday.
The State Leader published a plea on Sunday morning to collect names of children who may be missed by Santa Claus and to find warm-hearted residents willing to ensure no child goes without gifts. Readers are invited to mail coupons for donor anonymity if requested and to support the effort across Cheyenne and surrounding areas.
Private telegrams from El Paso report that General Fernandes I Poran led federal troops 23 miles north of Chihuahua against insurgents. Rebels used guerrilla tactics, remaining hidden in the rough terrain as clashes continued. Authorities claim forces are being increased and mobilization continues to counter the rebel bands.
