Report from London dated August 22 describes heavy fighting along the Ypres road during a French and British offensive. British troops gain about a mile of front near the Tore Mein road with probes further north, while German counterattacks and Allied artillery exchanges continue under difficult weather conditions.
At the instance of the local Red Cross chapter the merchants of Cheyenne are requested to close their stores Thursday afternoon August 23 1917 so employees can attend the racing meet the proceeds go to the Red Cross association. Mayor K N La Fontaine.
Mayor LaFontaine urges a charity day with Thoroughbred races at the park and a Red Cross dance at Maccabee temple to fund relief for Sammies in France. Attendees, trainers, officials and soldiers from Fort D. A. Russell contribute $1 entry tickets. proceeds fund the Red Cross.
Adolph Germer secretary of the national socialist party was held to the federal grand jury in bonds of 5000 dollars after a preliminary hearing before Federal Judge Carpenter in Chicago. He is charged with violation of the espionage act.

The War Department ordered suspension of construction at the Palo Alto national guard camp in California after local health authorities demanded sewer installation. Army officers call the expense unnecessary for a temporary setup and say the site may be abandoned if sewers are required.
