Epidemic Toll Surges in Russia as August Cases Decline

St. Petersburg reports 23 944 new cholera cases and 10 725 deaths for the week ending August 1 9 50 287 deaths in Russia this year yield a 44 5 percent mortality. Red Cross notes higher real totals with regional case counts across Kuban Don Cossack districts Ekaterinoslav Samara and other provinces. In St Petersburg six day period ends with 261 cases and 108 deaths, while overall Russia shows ongoing decline in the epidemic.

Walk All the Way From Kansas City to New York

D H Woolf and his wife completed a two thousand mile trek from Kansas City to New York walking on the last lap down Broadway. They were greeted at City Hall by Acting Mayor John P Mitchel who signed their documents. The couple traveled with a two wheel cart carrying a tent and camping gear drawn by a pony and slept roadside each night. Woolf, a musician, suffered a nervous breakdown last spring. They will stay in New York for two weeks.

Ill-Fated Boating Party Reaches Final Recovery

Man in Africa Learns to Talk to Monkeys

West Africa reports Prof Richard Garner has spent seven years studying monkey language and claims 28 distinct sounds. He says humans did not descend directly from apes and asserts monkeys speak a complex system. Garner dressed in khaki and lived in the woods near Cape Lopes, proposing many species exist in the region.
