Theodore Roosevelt to serve as temporary chairman of the state convention at Saratoga on September 27. The decision reflected Barnes Woodruff faction support and followed Roosevelt's previous primary defeats in Albany.

Man wins aerial race against birds in Amiens cross-country event

Amiens France August 16 The first race pitting nature against production saw Le Blanc in a Farman biplane fly fifty miles to Amiens as 47 carrier pigeons from Doual were released. The plane outpaced the birds and arrived ahead of the flock, with pigeons finishing minutes later and Le Gagneaux following after a longer flight.

All Veniremen Are Dismissed In Browne Trial

Chicago August 16 Judge Kersteau dismissed the panel of seventy one veniremen in the Browne election case. Nearly all said they had been approached about service as jurors and were ordered to report for further investigation. One venireman joked he would stick with Browne till hell froze over.

Fifteen Japanese Plead Guilty in West Seventeenth Street Gamble

Fifteen of eighteen Japanese arrested last week at a West Seventeenth street gambling hall pleaded guilty yesterday. Each received an $18 fine, totaling $595. the remaining three defendants were discharged.

Santa Fe executive James Hurley dies suddenly

James B Hurley general manager of the Santa Fe Railroad dies in Carlsbad from heart disease age not given. His son Harlow Hurley learned of the death at the Trans Mississippi golf tournament and rushed to Las Vegas to join his mother and sister. Hurley had been in poor health but his death was unexpected.

Talbot Home Ransacked in Estate Case Turmoil

Unknown intruders struck the Talbot residence at the corner of Twenty seventh and Snyder yesterday afternoon ransacking every room in search of papers affecting the estate of Major Talbot. Mrs Talbot, summoned to her attorney General John Charles Thompson, learned of the break in upon return two hours later.

Robbers Steal Thousands From Pullman Passengers

In Belleville Kansas on a westbound Rock Island train No 7 two men robbed sleeping passengers in the middle of the night and escaped with several thousand dollars in cash negotiable papers jewelry and clothing. Police from Leavenworth aided by Kansas and Nebraska towns pursue suspects with private detectives on the case but no arrests yet.

Freight Trains Collide Near Grand Junction Injuring Three

Two Rio Grande freight trains collided head on near Woodside about 2 am injuring three men from Grand Junction. Engineer Frank Mush and engineer Harry Lopas were hurt, Lopas severely with two broken ribs and a crushed arm. A wreck crew cleared the track after the crash caused by orders being disregarded and the westbound train not waiting at Green River.

Man arrested at pen door seeks murder confession

Columbus Ohio August 16 Charles Clayton alias Riley Price arrested at the penitentiary door while receiving discharge after four years for horse stealing. He confesses to killing his sweetheart Anna Wilmore in Heaton Ith in 1901 by beating her with a club and concealing her body in a well. He says he later led a life of crime.

Plan to Exhibit Farm Products in Western Campaign

E R Kelly of the Union Pacche passenger department in Onisha Nebraska arranged farm product exhibits for a western advertising campaign. He contracted with the Land and Securities company to supply exhibits from the state and to gather crop samples for shipment to Omaha. The Union Pacific will exhibit products in Des Moines Chicago and St Paul for national stock show purposes.

Cheyenne Council Authorizes Temporary Dams and Sign removals

The Cheyenne city council approved building temporary dams on North and South Crow creeks to redirect water into new lines to be completed in two months. It also ordered removal of signs obstructing sidewalks and authorized water use concessions for Cheyenne Securities Co at a rate of 1 per year for years, plus sidewalk repairs and a potential filtration plant study. Alderman Henderson opposed the concessions.

Washington reports show murders increasing and personal crisis reports climbing due to insanity says Dr. J H Kellogg superintendent of a Battle Creek sanatorium. He cites 10 000 murders last year and 17 000 personal crises with a 60 percent seven year rise.
