Washington officials say U S response to Bolshevik invasion may come after Poland sends its note. A US France Britain consultative process seeks a course of action with possible credits to aid Poland, moral support, and warnings to Soviet Russia as Poland nears collapse and border tensions rise.
In Constantinople on August 7 a proclamation by Damad Ferid Pasha declares Mohammedans cannot cooperate with the Bolsheviks without abandoning their religion. It offers amnesty to nationalists who end fighting but warns continued resistance may lead to further dismemberment of the country.
Berlin dispatch reports Warsaw to be evacuated today as Polish government and allies retreat to Cracow. The Warsaw scenes note removal of secret American legation files led by J C White with guards. exodus of population continues and many relief workers depart. Paris dispatch says Bolshevik gains limited to a small sector near Droheevyn and Bug river while Warsaw and Grodno fronts hold.
Unofficial returns show Democrats renominating A. B. Rouse in the sixth district and J. C. Cantrill in the seventh. Republicans nominate Miller Hughes of Wickliffe in the first district, Marshall Duncan of Springfield in the fourth, and Omar Barber of Owensville in the ninth. Democratic picks include Prof J. B. Richmond in the fifth and Judge Ralph Gilbert in the eighth.
Marion Ohio August 17 Senator Harding and advisers conferred to arrange more front porch speaking dates as Republican organizations request appointments. Officials said additional engagements may be announced soon and that two delegations could visit the nominee on the same day.
Augusto Pasquale known as The Crank says he tried to obtain more money from the Coughlin family after the kidnap of 12 month old Blake Ly Coughlin. He claims the abductor is a Russian Pole aided by a woman, and that $12,000 was left at Seedland. The confession notes the woman refused to return the child.
A two hour interview with Republican National Committee Chairman Will Hays leaves 33 Connecticut suffragists not fully satisfied with the party stance on the suffrage amendment. They urge passage by the thirty sixth state so Connecticut women can vote in November.
Governor Roberts called an extra session of the Tennessee legislature to convene Monday noon with 1389 topics. The first action listed is ratification of suffrage, followed by laws on the legal status of women and voting qualifications. Suffragists and opponents arrived as the session neared.
State and federal investigations into Charles Ponzi methods were nearly at a standstill in Boston as the federal audit remained unfinished. Edwin L. Pride, the auditor, warned completion would likely be delayed to the middle of next week after a day of officials conferences.

Governor Cox and Franklin D Roosevelt led a huge march at Montgomery County fairgrounds as Cox outlined his campaign platform. He framed the league of nations as central to progress and peace, urged support for Article 10 reservations, and promoted woman suffrage law enforcement and tax cuts, amid wide Democratic backing in Dayton, Ohio.
Wireless messages sent from Dublin to Archbishop Mannix aboard the Baltic last Wednesday have not been answered. The silence leads authorities to be believed to have blocked communications with the steamer.
A car with seven occupants including seven women and four men backed into a frame shop on Thames street and Lincoln highway, punching a hole in the wall. The men had voted to return to work if conditions were met including a body return, discharge of strikebreakers, and a working agreement. They planned to meet again at 5 30 pm for counsel and officer reports.
In Denver the death toll from rioting climbs to six as martial law remains in force. Troops control the city while strikers vote to return to work conditionally. Tramway refuses union recognition but will re employ workers. Military blocks strikers meetings on an ultimatum vote and operates cars on all lines under protection. Strike breakers are disarmed by federal soldiers as new arrivals move in.
In Denver the death toll from rioting climbs to six with the death of Hugh Miller, 48, after last night’s unrest. John W. Shoemaker, of Smith Center Kansas, identified as a prior victim, was among the crowd at the East Side car barns. The coroner’s office opened an inquiry with two witnesses examined and six arrests today, bringing total arrests to 86.
At a meeting of military state and city leaders in Denver it was decided to run streetcars on all lines starting at 8 am with sixty cars in service by nightfall. Cars will carry passengers while strike-breakers operate them and armed guards stand by. patrols will cover routes and car barns as police monitor to keep order.
Denver faced a large security response as 250 federal troops and 2,000 American Legion members were mobilized after rioting that killed six and injured 68. Troops arrived from Camp Funston and were to quarter at the city auditorium with additional strike breakers, police, and guards at key sites.
Alexander M. Carlisle of the National Bank of London relayed a Sinn Fein invitation to Premier Lloyd George last week. Carlisle said the Sinn Fein wished to confer with the government for an immediate Irish settlement and that the premier declined, stating no meeting would occur.
