President Wilson will ask Congress to pass additional measures to lower living costs. Justice Department agents will hunt hoarders of essentials and profiteers nationwide and prosecute them under the food control act.
The committee representing the cabinet in the high cost of living fight includes W B Colver chairman of the federal trade commission W D Hines director general of the railroads and R C Lefingwell assistant secretary of the treasury.
A cabinet sub-committee under Attorney General Palmer announced immediate measures to prevent rises in wheat prices thanks to a government guarantee. Director Barnes pledged flour price readjustment funded by the national treasury, subject to later world price movements relative to the guaranteed basis.
The grain corporation announced immediate steps to sell standard export flour in carload lots nationwide at not more than ten dollars per barrel. Director Barnes said the price is a dollar below any price in the last four months and projected substantial wheat production changes in North America and Europe, with major shifts in U S and foreign outputs.
