President Wilson seeks congressional authority to use armed force after General Huerta refuses to salute the American flag over the arrest of U S sailors in Tampico. Navy fleets advance toward Mexican waters as Cabinet meets to plan a pacific blockade and other steps.
Washington reports through Secretary Bryan that President Wilson will not sign any protocol that would imply recognition of Huerta. O'Shaughnessy in Mexico City relays Huerta’s conditional acceptance. Mayo-backed demands hinge on protocol terms. Signals indicate ongoing exchanges as tensions rise along the border with Vera Cruz workers and ships mobilizing.
Governor J. M. Carey and state officials gathered with crowds at the Leader office last night as the extra edition hit the presses. Officials said they would not name volunteers for potential war with Mexico but Wyoming would be ready if needed. National Guard officers and soldiers sought the latest war news and urged President Wilson to enforce his demands on Huerta.
In Sunday's edition the Leader promised rapid phone responses to reader queries about the Mexican situation. The paper reported Huerta not firing the 21 gun salute by 6 PM and noted hundreds called or visited the office seeking updates, with about 750 calls answered that day.
