New York reports 160 dead from the Titanic disaster with 745 survivors and six more dead in lifeboats. Eyewitness accounts vary on panic and order aboard as the hull ripped open and the ship broke in two near midnight.
A survivors committee released a press statement via the Carpathia detailing the May 12 1912 night when Titanic struck an iceberg on a clear starry sea. It notes lifebelts and boats deployed, women and children placed on deck, and Carpathia rescuing and sharing rooms and comforts with survivors.
Isidor Straus a New York merchant and the eldest of the three Straus brothers boarded the Titanic. Born in 1845 in Rhenish Bavaria, he came to the United States in 1854 with Lazarus Straus and the family later settled in Talbotton Georgia. His early career began after an 1863 assignment abroad for the Georgia Export and Import Company. He served in the Fifty third Congress after a special election.
New York reports Captain Smith of the Titanic shot himself on the ship’s bridge. An engineer also died by his own hand. In the struggle for lifeboats three Italians were killed. Two attempts were needed before Captain Smith fired. A revolver was wrested from him by officers in the ship’s library before he fled to the bridge and fired.
Philadelphia survivor Tay lor describes being saved minutes before the sinking after the iceberg strike. Col Gracie recounts saving the young bride Mrs Strauss and aiding others as the ship went down. Astor reportedly refused to join the lifeboat with his bride, remaining to help. The Titanic orchestra is praised for playing until the end as rescue efforts continue.
Police search records in the Leffingwell matter as Warren Jenkins faces an inquest over the death of his wife killed last Sunday. Authorities pursue all leads including possible motives tied to Mrs Jenkins money. The coroner's inquest convenes this morning with burial planned in Brighton Colorado.
Report from Miehland Light Massachusetts dated April 18 says the Carpathia, cruising at about one to one and a half knots in a gale, is convoyed by United States cruisers Chester and Salem. Mrs. Astor is dangerously ill and over 100 aboard are sick. provisions are aboard to reach New York, with arrival expected late tonight or Friday forenoon.
An official describes the Titanic's rapid sinking after striking massive iceberg projections. The bulkheads failed as underwater spines and pressure from the iceberg damaged the hull, flooding the engine rooms and cutting power, leaving the ship in darkness.

A Northwestern train stalled near Lost Springs and traffic delayed developments. One man found dead eight miles from the wagon. several other shepherds missing or dead across Hartville and Lingie areas. Government losses include the FI Valley Sheep Co reporting five thousand sheep gone.
