Athens dispatches report the British battleship Lord Nelson stranded at the Dardanelles and destroyed by Turkish fire. The vessel built in 1906 with 16500 tons and four 17 inch guns may be the first sunk there. Other ships sunk include Ocean Irresistible Fouvet Hermes and Divine according to official notices.
New York April 5 An Atlantic coast storm caused extensive loss of life and property. Dozens of ships sunk or damaged with at least seventy lives lost, including the Prinz Mauritz off Virginia capes and the Edward Luckenbach. The Coast Guard and warships aided rescues as wreckage strews beaches from Virginia to Georgia.
Turkish armored cruiser Medjidieh was sunk after striking a mine during a chase by Russian destroyers near Odessa. Two small Russian vessels, the Provident and Vostochnaya, were sunk. crews were captured. A Turkish mine sweeper near the Dardanelles was also sunk by Port Kun Kale batteries.
On Sunday afternoon off the Isle of Wight the Glaskow steamer Olivine and the Russian bark Hermes were sunk by a German submarine. Their crews launched boats and were rescued by a British torpedo boat destroyer. The City of Bremen sailing from Dublin was sunk off Wolf Rock south of Lands End. four crew members drowned and twelve survivors reached Penzance.
Police discovered Herman Well shot killed in his quiet West Sixty third Street room. He was bound to a chair with cloth gag and twine, indicating a violent struggle. Neighbors say he kept money hidden. cash register was rifled and his mattress opened.

A gale sinks multiple vessels including the Prinz Maurits off Cape Hatteras with about 54 lost, tug Edward Luckenbach near Virginia Capes with 14 saved or lost, barges 9 and 16 off Delaware Capes with 10 seamen lost, and other ships and barges ashore from Massachusetts to North Carolina with crews rescued by breeches buoy and coast guard units. The Old Dominion liner Jefferson feared lost off Newport News.
Paris April 5 Captain Herail a French cavalry officer will face a court martial for killing his wife who followed him to Compiegne defying orders banning officers families from camps. He suffered illness after the crime but recovered and was handed to military police.
Attorney Arthur Bullard Johnson, representing an international committee, cites mass killings and looting in Mexico City. He claims Americans, Swedes, Ottomans and Spaniards were among the victims and details vast attacks by Carranza soldiers and Zapata troops, with food and goods seized and civilians harmed. Johnson plans to present affidavits to President Wilson and Secretary Bryan in Washington.
Amid sun and wind after a weekend storm hundreds of children with baskets gathered as gates opened at dawn for the annual Easter egg roll at the White House. Adults entered only with children to keep the focus on youngsters. President Wilson attended church and spent the day quietly at the White House.
Toledo reports a major fire at the Niay oga hotel on Sunday destroying the building. Rescue crews search ruins for missing guests while the body of Mrs J L Rye of Adrian Michigan is found, with her husband’s clothing nearby suggesting he may be buried beneath the walls.
Preliminary survey for the Wyoming and Southwestern railroad from Lac Porte Colorado to Torrington is announced. Kansas and Wyoming capitalists back the project with engineers Bolts and Barbolt organizing a party to oversee the work. The line would connect Burtiston with the Union Pacific route and serve the farming regions of the Alvin district in Wyoming and western Nebraska.
Havana reports Jess Willard, the Kansas cowboy, defeats Jack Johnson in the 26th round to become the new world heavyweight champion. The crowd of about 5,000 erupts as Willard lands a swift left and right to the chin, dropping Johnson, while pandemonium erupts and soldiers guard the ring.
