Paris reports say the American steamer Aztec was sunk by a German vessel. Some crew were saved, including the captain, while 28 are missing. French patrol boat M Krous aided three hours after sinking. Names of American crew members are listed from San Francisco Honolulu Hawaii.
Washington reports rapid recruiting with the Army and Navy expanding readiness for imminent defense. More guardsmen are recalled for police duty pushing total federalized troops above 60,000. The War Department orders mustering out guardsmen who work for government or private firms on government projects. New call orders include the Second West Virginia, First Vermont, and two Connecticut coast artillery companies. March yields large gains with 6700 Army recruits and a Navy record 473 accepted.
Washington April 2 Democrats with four independents organized the new House and reelected Speaker Clark by 217 to 205. The roll call drew applause for Jeannette Rankin the Montana congresswoman the first woman clerk to the House while attempts to block last session rules failed.
