Urilda Steamer Disaster On Missouri River
The Urilda a stern wheel steamer on the St Louis to Fort Benton route struck a reef near Kate Bwiney bend about forty miles above Brouxity. The bow tore off and the forepart sank the vessel threatening passengers with scalding steam. About fifty on board were injured or killed. Captain crippled with two broken legs, others severely hurt. Survivors reached shore as relief boats were sent from Sioux City. Owned by J Kountz of Pittsburgh the Urilda was new to this season after winter lay up near Fort Benton.
