German warship Panther bombarded and sank the Haytien gunboat after Hayti seized a German merchant steamer. The Haytien admiral burned his vessel before abandoning it. Hayti appeals to Washington, claiming Monroe Doctrine violation, but officials may view it as a maritime dispute.
General Chaffee cabled news of an attack on troops near Camp Vickers, Mindanao on September 1. Lieutenant Parker of the Eleventh Infantry and two soldiers were wounded. One soldier was killed. Brigadier General Sumner ordered the troops to advance into enemy territory and demand promises of good behavior.

In Wilkes Barre two strikers shot two of their own comrades at the Malty coal mine as deputies arrived. One striker died with thirty bullets in his body, the other seriously wounded. the attackers believed they were deputies. Earlier, John Kastato was killed and Frank Patrick badly hurt. President Mitchell denied plans to end the strike, saying the ranks remain solid.
Chicago reports parts of the body from Iowa belong to William Bartholin the murderer of his mother and Minnie Mitchell. Detectives exhumed the remains at Riceville and identified them beyond doubt with notes from Bartholin confessing to both killings and naming accomplices.
Forty five armed men with bloodhounds pursue Fred Karnes for a week after he fatally harmed Sheriff William at Whiting. Karnes heads toward the Winnebago agency in Nebraska emulating the outlaw Harry Tracy and calls at farm houses for meals, keeping a public safety item beside him.
London rumor says Sir Thomas Lipton intends to run for a seat in parliament. The report notes Lipton may enter political life during the next general election period.
London dispatch reports William Toll of Kansas City, a self confessed murderer, remanded for further investigation as to Kansas interest. Police express no faith in Toll's confession to killing George Landis and suspect he seeks a free passage to the United States.
New York reports Bradford Mc Gregor, heir to an oil fortune and husband of Clara Schlemmer, died tonight after a dangerous operation. His widow inherits millions.
George Gould spent the day in Denver inspecting properties he controls. He visited Burnham shops and the Denver and Rio Grande offices, expressing satisfaction with western assets. He plans to depart for Omaha with his wife, two sons, and a large retinue aboard a four palace car train guarded by trained personnel.
Yesterday afternoon Troop A and Company EB W N G started life practice on the Hap py Jack road range west of town. All members participate as preliminary firing proceeds. The best score yesterday was 20 of 25 by Jack McFarlane of Troop A.
Cheyenne Wyoming August 9 1902 sealed proposals for clearing trees and brush from the new Crow Creek reservoir basin are due September 16 1902. Bidders must include a 100 certified check and provide a 300 bond. council may reject any bid. Proposals addressed to EB A Abry city clerk and marked for the water and sewerage committee.
