New York officials indicate progress toward a national railroad consolidation into three groups. Eastern roads would be led by the Vanderbilts, the West of Chicago by Hill and associates, and Gould with his circle, with Gould controlling Colorado lines.
Paris officials decide to reduce mine labor hours to nine then eight, affecting about a quarter of a million workers and likely halting a planned strike. In Missouri, Gatrell is found guilty of murdering Colorado coal miner Donegan. the 70 year old prisoner shows indifference as his son’s trial awaits.
New York reports rail officials say the switchmen strike is broken and freight traffic to Boston is normal, while strike leaders deny it and claim the traffic remains paralyzed. A fire at Peru Indiana destroys the elephant barn of B. B. Wallace's circus but seven elephants are saved despite live coals.
The secretary of the navy received Capt Perry aboard the Iowa dispatching that the Panama situation is quiet and satisfactory. All trains are running and he indicates arrangements to prevent further trouble.
In New York on November 23 Thomas Boden, an Irish immigrant, was ordered deported after a TB finding but secured a writ of habeas corpus to appeal. The decision marks the first constitutional test of treasury rulings on immigration health grounds.
Mrs. Grover Cleveland issues a statement that Grover Cleveland is ill with a cold from hunting, with no signs of pneumonia and expected rapid recovery.
Telluride Colorado November 23 miners from many towns acted as guards of honor at the funeral for twenty four dead from the Smuggler Union disaster last Wednesday. The union blames management saying non union supervisors caused the accident. Tension between management and the union has grown since last spring riots. Inside the mine the workers were all union.
Azoo City Michigan reports a string of disasters in a week with three steamers sinking or damaged two fires and three railroad wrecks. No lives were lost though the steamer City of Knoxville struck a hidden obstruction and sank. The loaded barge Dewey sank at its moorings and the steamer Rees Prichard carrying 7000 sacks of cotton went down near Belonia.
Captain Hall arrived in Seattle aboard the British ship Melfort and will go to Washington to seek damages from the Mexican government. He alleges he was falsely imprisoned for pear fishing in the Gulf of California.
On the Cymrio as it neared Queenstown a passenger Thomas Holliday from Ohio attacked his wife with a large knife then killed himself. The injured woman was taken to hospital and both bodies were left at Queenstown after the ship continued. German protests over Samoa envoy appointment persisted in Washington as George Heimrod of Omaha was named consul general.
Helena reports a work train wreck on the Northern Pacific this morning. Engineer Leek was instantly killed, Fireman Johnson seriously injured. Stockholm notes Swedish journalists form a trade union for wage standards. The piece also references the Prince of Wales and a Sunday school exchange. A married woman seeks housework work at reasonable wages with a child.
Pittsburg Kan November 23 detectives uncovered thousands in stolen goods at the Lane family home. Mr and Mrs Lane their daughter and son led burglaries in town and neighboring areas with a plan where the son hid in stores while the parents entered at night. Accused Lane family members were arrested amid great town excitement.
Cambridge Mass Nov 28. Yale and Harvard fans crowd Cambridge field despite sleet to watch the annual clash. Kickoff at 3 pm amid high confidence. Ticket sales reached 35 000 before noon and expected 40 000 on site. Yale trailed Harvard 7 0 after 15 minutes with Harvard scoring a touchdown and a goal. First half score Harvard 17 Yale 0.
St. Louis reports seven of twenty one lady managers named for the exposition. Western appointees include Mrs. FP H Ernest of Denver Mrs. Andrews of Hastings Nebraska and Mrs. Margaret Daly of Anaconda Montana.
In Pocahontas Virginia eight additional victims are added to the Baby mine death toll. Officials who entered the mine yesterday all perished.
A string of personal mentions records travels and visits by Cheyenne Lander and Denver residents. Names include Beeler Downey Cramer Cramer Crow Mortimer Snow and Wilsons in Fort Logan and Canon City. Attendees plan trips to Lincoln North Platte Denver and Canon City.
On the Arizona border near Naco American cattlemen and rangers fought Mexican officers in a lively encounter. Mexicans claimed victory and seized many cattle. A separate notice announces a stockholders meeting for Abel Sheep Company in Cheyenne Wyoming to amend its incorporation and move principal office to Rawlins.
