Washington, chief police magistrate of London, died this morning.
Admiral Caillard withdraws French troops from Mitylene with full satisfaction from Turkey and backing of the powers. London reports an increased death toll from the Brackenly action in the Transvaal with 2 additional dead and 30 wounded on top of 219 known casualties.
Kansas City November 11 The congress of the National Prison Wardens Association opened in a Methodist church with large attendance. Captain Lemly of the Schley court of inquiry fame delivered a strong advocacy of prison reform.
William Ogden of Maclean county Illinois has purchased nearly two hundred thousand acres in western Kansas and plans to convert it into the largest wheat ranch in the world.
Two hunters in Sendiega Cal. near Santa Catarina found a white man's body near a cave. A lion emerged and fed on the corpse until killed by the hunters. The body was taken to Ensenada and identified as Frank Cook, a carpenter.
Milwaukee dated note reports Polish priests and laymen forming a delegation to travel to Rome to urge the Pope to grant greater consideration to Polish Catholics in America. A Chicago Buffalo and Pennsylvania movement sparked many Poles to leave the church and form an independent Polish speaking hierarchy.
Louisville reports William Simpson, a Zeimmaster Bros. salesman, drank carbolic acid and died after learning of a $1,000 shortage. A telegram offering a loan for the amount arrived two minutes before his death.
News from Leavenworth Kansas reports nine convicts remain at large after a prison breakout near a week ago. Lawrence Lewis the thirteenth captured after a back shot by a hunting posse. Meanwhile three others armed and fleeing with officers’ guns.
Paris reports M. Santos Dumont has received the 100000 franks prize for the successful balloon flight. A big check was sent to him this morning despite apponints in the case. In Missouri John Davis was fatally gored by a Jersey bull at his stock farm near St Joseph. A dog aided Davis, who bought the animal in Chicago.
Congressman Charles B. Landis of Indiana, a frequent critic of President Roosevelt, met the president in the White House. Roosevelt warmly praised Landis for his ideas and attitude on civil service after a nervous introduction, and the two talked for about an hour.
Eugene Cline timekeeper for the Standard Mine was shot and killed by disgruntled miner Shuff who claimed unpaid wages. Shuff fled but was soon captured and jailed.
Thirteen people in Kenosha Wisconsin are seriously ill from ptomaine poisoning after eating tainted cream cheese sold by a west side grocer. Families of Joseph Borkenhagen A I Purgu son Joseph Barnes and Carmen de Samona were affected with several in critical condition. The cheese had been kept in stock until tainted and children were hardest hit. The little daughter of Joseph Borkenhagen is quite low.
In Cincinnati on November 11 two football players suffered severe injuries during Saturday games. James Kirkpatrick of Cincinnati was reported in serious condition after a spine injury from a tackle in the UC Hanover College clash. Louis Runck of Newport Xavier College was carried off with little hope for recovery after a Newport High School contest.
Washington November 11 Major J L Pneher commander of the Eighth Infantry reports that yesterday while the Meindora expedition was in camp they were attacked by insurgents in a fierce battle. Six insurgents killed and two wounded, three Americans wounded. Deserter Piteher arrested wearing a Filipino uniform and leading a group of holomen.
New York reports mood authority says Wu Ting Peng will fill the Chinese literature chair at Columbia University after resigning his Washington post. Paris honors Bailly the river brigade policeman who died rescuing a drowning woman and is declared a martyr with high military honors.
Engenada reports the steamer Seesserqyes will sail for Mazatlan tomorrow carrying prisoners implicated in the September convict mutiny. They will be sent to Sonora and several years added to each sentence. A separate Washington notice shows the year’s average corn yield at about sixteen bushels per acre, down from twenty five last year.
Peter Gilsey head of the Gilsey house in New York collapsed from a burst blood vessel and died within minutes. He was the eldest son of the elder Peter Gilsey and a major figure in commercial New York alongside the Astors. He was 57.
