A Sun special reports a burial of 100 ox team workers buried near Leeds as bodies are exhumed. A million and a quarter net rise in legal reserve appears in the bank statement. The Reformed Episcopal church council amended creed wording to say He went into the place of the departed spirits, while the Nicene creed was adopted unchanged.
Washington reports the President sharply condemns the Senate currency bill as reported by the finance committee. He would accept it only with amendments or if it becomes consistent to sign upon Senate concurrence. He calls Congress to act on redistribution or the original bill, else he will veto. House committees take no decisive action on banking or appropriations.
Reports from San Francisco on May 15 describe conflicting accounts of Vasquee and two gang members being captured. One credible version says they were surprised at dinner, weapons in another room, and Vasquee sustained wounds while attempting to escape. Doctors expect possible recovery. Los Angeles shows high excitement with guards at the jail.
The Wisconsin Attorney General applied to the Supreme Court of Illinois for leave to file quo warranto actions against the Milwaukee and St. Paul and Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Companies to vacate their charters for refusing to obey the law limiting charges. Leave was granted in both cases.
The Willamsburg area in Massachusetts suffered a catastrophic flood when a reservoir broke, sweeping through Haydenville Leeds Northampton Skinnerville and Florence. It destroyed fifteen factories employing about 1,200 workers, drowned many residents, and caused massive property losses estimated at 310 million dollars. Two iron bridges were lost and sixty bodies were recovered as the flood covered over fifty acres. Authorities note recent repairs failed to prevent the disaster.
A collision on four rail rows at Merthyr Tydvil Wales seriously injures about forty people. Other items note Spanish politics protests in Madrid and the French assembly’s predicted dissolution amid European diplomatic moves.
