Michael Reese and Adam Grant of Murphy Grant Co elected directors of the Bank of California replacing retiring James R. Keene and Robert Morrow. Charles L. Low died yesterday in San Francisco. A remarkable tidal wave at Gaviota in San Luis Obispo County occurred between 7:10 and 7:30 a.m. with the sea rising and falling about twelve feet three times and causing no damage.
Francis Bacon of China Mutual Insurance Company died today in Massachusetts at age 73.
In Chattanooga on May 10 the cornerstone ceremony for the Confederate dead monument was conducted with Masonic rites. A detachment of United States troops led by the Second Infantry band participated in the observance.
In Newfoundland news the schooner Codseeker from Halifax bound for Barrington capsized off Sable Island. Two crew members landed in a dory at Ington, while thirteen others drowned.
Columbia May 10 The state senate voted to go into an election for chief justice on Tuesday the 15th. The house will concur. The senate also passed a resolution asking the governor to seek clemency from the President for prisoners held on riot and murder charges in the recent political conflict.
Chicago May 10. Correspondence between Mrs Chisholm and Governor J M Stone of Mississippi reveals threats from a mob in Kemper county. Judge Chisholm and his daughter suffer attacks and a stranger is stopped for questioning at their home. Mrs Chisholm seeks a state intervention to permit burial of her son and relief from danger.
Police dispersed a mob at the Standard Oil entrance as hundreds gathered to block workers from entering. Several strikers were severely injured in the confrontation led by officers enforcing dispersement orders amid the protest by Bung Starters and other clubs.
May 10 dispatches report delays to a planned Turkish attack on Montenegrin positions due to severe supply shortages and widespread illness. Wee fever scurvy and other diseases cripple troops near Mostar and Scutari, with Russian forces moving toward Bulgaria and the Danube region amid tension.
Reports from London and Berlin detail evolving tensions as Russia presses in on Poland and the Ottoman frontier. Czar addresses Polish legion risks in Constantinople while Britain weighs Russia’s aims and potential Baltic fleet actions amid rumors of Bulgarian autonomy and Armenian cessions.
