It includes Post Office Building occupants, clothing shops Marks & Myers, confectionery and soda water, dentists Dr. J. J. Clark, dressmaking, dry goods, fruits and vegetables, furniture by Converse & Warren, and various streets such as Eddy Ferguson and 16th.
In New York on May 5 ex congressman John Morrissy struck State Senator John Fox during a disorderly altercation at Mal von Dore. Fox was bruised and slightly injured as friends intervened. Local notes mention railway law opinions from Mason Curtis and Evarts on Wisconsin issues and a decision to treat Confederate and Union graves equally on Decoration Day. The Erie Canal opened this morning.
Rumor says E J Washburn minister to France has been offered the Treasury post and his response is awaited. In the rotunda, 400 to 500 laborers met with a Uistelet delegate about wages from contractors. They seek a Congress appropriation to cover the due sums, to be deducted from government payments to the District.
In San Francisco on May 5 a faction of the Woman's Temperance Alliance appeared before the Board of Supervisors with a petition seeking an order against selling liquor in corner groceries. Mayor Otis and the board considered the issue as a large crowd watched the proceedings.
Boston May 5. President Watson of the Erie Road resigns the directorship of the New York and New England railroad. Columbia South Carolina May 5. Capt John Christopher Commandant of Yorkville Fire Department kills himself by shooting.
London dispatch notes a portion of the deck and cargo burned on the steamship Ohio after leaving Philadelphia for Queenstown. It says the ship sailed for the United States and minister Jay is to depart Saturday. Liverpool reports the vessel arrived with battened hatches and the fire possibly still burning in the hold. Lisbon reports public joy over Bilbao’s Republican occupation with street processions.
Washington reports the house currency bill advances with a four to three vote to retire seventy percent of new national bank notes. Other actions include appropriations bills, fortification law passage, and nominations and river harbor measures amid cabinet talks.
