In Warsaw today a deadly surge of protests and reprisals left nearly 100 dead or wounded. Troops fired on crowds while workers used bombs and firearms in retaliation. By evening patrols and heavy forces maintained a tense, ominous city as May 6 looms.

Glenwood Springs Colo May 1 Secretary Loeb rejected Miss Wood's charges as ridiculous and said he knows nothing of the book manuscript she alleges he forced to surrender. He refused an official investigation, calling the suit a bid for notoriety and insisted he will be present when the papers are served.
Washington May 1 Col A G Stewart of Waukon Iowa recently named Porto Rico attorney general resigned effective today President Roosevelt reportedly asked for the move due to reports that the official was too busy with social entertainments to perform duties His term barely covered travel expenses.
Santa Fe railroad officials report all damage to roadbeds from floods in Arizona and New Mexico has been repaired and the line is open for traffic. Eleven westbound trains held at Albuquerque departed today along with delayed Eastern and Southern trains. Two limited eastbound trains left Los Angeles over the Santa Fe for the first time in days.
Paris May 1 General Porter prepares to depart Frange after a May 12 dinner by agmer Minister Del casse and an elaborate May 17 reception by the American colony. He will tour Switzerland by automobile before returning for the French government to accord military and naval honors to the remains of Paul Jones.
New York May 1. Abraham Levy for Nan Patterson closes a five hour defense arguing for acquittal in the Caesar Young case. Levy says no manslaughter and no compromise verdict, suggesting Young shot himself. Assistant District Attorney Rand will close for the prosecution, and a jury verdict may come tomorrow afternoon.
Police in New York begin a citywide census of Chinese residents with precinct by precinct tallies of occupation. Chinatown is excluded from the list and no Chinese names will be recorded.
Oklahoma City May 1. A Wilburton report says gas hindered the search for thirteen miners buried by Sunday’s explosion. Officials expect four to five days before recovery.
Chicago authorities disclosed that the Employers' Teaming company plans to arm 1,000 non union teamsters with Winchester rifles carried unconcealed. Police chief O'Neil said he would not remove the martial display and would not act to prohibit legal weapon carriage.
Paris unions held a monster meeting on Labor Day and endorsed an eight-hour day. Disorderly manifestations broke out at Brent and St Etienne where streetcars were halted, but no serious incidents reported.

They will be paid union rates and carry rifles in wagons tomorrow, despite Mayor Dunne saying police will not authorize arms. Four men were hurt in today’s clashes, with injuries likely higher.

President Roosevelt and hunting party spent the day in the saddle from 8 to 4:30 as Secretary Loeb arrived at 2 p.m. and will return tomorrow. The party did not bag any game and will not move to the East Divide Creek camp until Loeb arrives at the West Divide quarters. New bear tracks reported near Penny ranch on the east divide where hunting luck ran low.
Salt Lake City May 1 Captain W A Balborne of the Twenty-ninth Infantry at Fort Douglas shot Lieutenant William H Point twice and then killed himself with a heavy revolver after a confrontation following Balborne's arrest for drunkenness. Point was wounded and Balborne died on the scene.
The U S Supreme Court, in an opinion by Justice Brown, settles the long dispute over a tract in Argentine Kaw counties between Indian and white claimants. The principal representative was George Washington, a son of Susan White Fellow, with a 1869 patent. The court ruled in favor of the Indians.
Berlin May 1 Count von Tattenbach German charge d'affaires to Morocco left for Tangier with an escort of high ranking German officers. He reportedly carries unusual powers and is fully aligned with the Emperor's wishes and well regarded in Morocco.
The Clarke stable, including Hon Voyage Sally Lunn Morone Will Clarke and Miss Georgie, was shipped from California to join the eastern grand circuit. Will Clarke is the son of Senator Clarke.

Washington May 1 The Supreme Court denied John A Henson's motion for rehearing in his case resisting removal from New York to the District of Columbia for trial on a charge of defrauding the government in timber and public lands misappropriation. Immediate mandate was directed.
A May day meeting of the National Cigar Leaf Tobacco Association in Lancaster Pennsylvania protested a tariff cut on American tobacco imported from the Philippine Islands. Secretary Taft seeks to reduce the tariff from 76 to 625 percent. The association includes importers packers and dealers with $70,000,000 invested.
Captain OD H Jarvis, longtime collector of customs for the Alaska district, resigns effective today to become general manager of the Alaska Salmon Cannery properties bought by New York interests of the Pacific Packing and Navigat company, often called the Salmon Trust.
In American League action Detroit lost to St Louis 0 to 6 while New York edged Boston 3 to 4 and Philadelphia won 4 to 5 over Washington. National League results include Hoxton 2, New York 8 and St Louis 1 with Pittsburg 2 and Cincinnati tied. Western League saw St Joseph 1 and Bronx City 6 as Denver 6 beat Omaha 1 and Colorado Springs 3 Des Moines 6.
