Pinchot's Dishonesty Exposed in the House
In Washington on March 30 charges of a serious nature were leveled at Gifford Pinchot chief of the forestry bureau by Smith of California and Mondell of Wyoming during consideration of the agricultural appropriation bill. Mondell accused him of paying travel expenses for officials to conventions in the west with government funds and of using money to boost the bureau in newspapers. Pinchot was defended by Pollard and Scott. Mondell's amendments to limit travel expenses and to bar funding for magazine or newspaper advertising of the bureau's work were adopted, while the section enabling the agriculture secretary to advise forest land owners was struck out.
