Costly land frauds trial ends with Hyde conviction
Washington reports the long federal land fraud trial concluded with Frederick A. Hyde and Joost H. Schneider convicted on forty counts while John A. Benson and Henry P. Dimond were acquitted. The case, begun 1902 and ending after twelve weeks, involved defrauding the government of thousands of acres of public lands. The jury faced extended confinement and the total government cost reached 210000. Benson remains under indictment for bribery. Ex Senator Spooner criticized Roosevelt’s policies in a Taft dinner remark.
