A Londow dispatch reports party riots in Helfast Ireland Saturday night resulting in several deaths and many wounded. The item notes broader unrest and political tension across the region with clashes and casualties.
Testimony before the Potter investigating committee reveals Agnes Jenks states she authored the letter attributed to Secretary Sherman. She asserts no complicity by Sherman and explains the motives behind the letter to protect Anderson and seek guarantees from visiting statesmen. She gave the letter to Weber and has not heard from him since.
A June dinner at Wormley’s in Washington with Sam Randall and others turned to shock when a waiter returned with news that Lincoln was killed by Wilkes Booth. Coyle, Morrissey and Randall urged burning papers and destroying evidence while a fire burned in the room.
Secretary Sherman says the Potter investigation, once revolutionary, now focuses on whether Anderson lied in his protest or lies today and whether a Louisiana elector’s name was signed to an invalid supplement. He deems the inquiry no longer important enough to justify its expense.
Angier Chace, former treasurer of the Fall River mills, pleaded guilty in Massachusetts and was sentenced to 12 years in state prison and 12 days in solitary confinement.
In Brooklyn on June 24 Oliver B. Vincent and Wm. H. Code clerks in the tax collector's office ignited a gas jet with a match causing a blast that wrecked the vault area. Vincent was badly burned and thrown across the room while Code was buried. both are fatally injured. Several others were hurt and Associate Justice Miller’s prognosis is cautiously hopeful.
In Detroit the Michigan Central railroad held its annual stockholders meeting. Directors for the year named include Wm. H. Visilt Augustus Schell Cornelius Vander Samuel F. Barger Wm. Vanderbilt Anson Stager Ashley Pond Wm. L. Scott and Edwin D. Worcester. Ten million dollars on the Vanderbilt ticket and five million on the Taylor ticket were voted from a total of eighteen million dollars in stock.
Washington June 24 The Potter investigation committee resumes with Mrs Jenks testifying she dictated the Sherman letter and plans to produce Anderson letters tomorrow Butler called a rowdy by Jenks who vows self defense. Boynton notes no direct White House call on Anderson’s appointment.
Eagle Pass dispatch describes Generals Mackenzie and Shafter arriving in Galveston and preparing to move into Mexico. They reach a crossing near Newtown about forty five miles from the border and clash with Col Valdez's Mexican detachment. After a tense standoff the Americans force the crossing with Valdez withdrawing, then claiming future opposition.
Queen Mencepes received last rites at five o clock Monday morning in the presence of the King and Royal Montpensier family and ministers. Congressmen visited the Executive mansion to pay respects and inquire about issues for constituents before returning home. Representatives Rainey and Small met with the President on political and other state affairs. Plow Company works on the Passaic river were destroyed by fire Sunday. Many workers laid off. estimated loss $150,000 with unknown insurance.
Gen. T. L. Rosser, linked to a scandal and an alleged duel challenge against Louisiana Congressman Ackie, arrived in St Paul on a Saturday. He is in Minnesota performing duties as Chief Engineer of the Northern Pacific railways.
A Turkish stand reports a Turkish wing forward move and British plans for a gendarme in place of the Russian occupation. Vienna and Berlin dispatches discuss Bulgaria autonomy, Roumania arrangements, and possible Russian Turkish compromises around Adrianople. Henley entries list university and club crews with American participation amid strong current conditions. Queen Mercedes of Spain suffers a taxing condition with a violent Saturday hemorrhage.
