Albany June 22 Conkling urged stalwarts to stand by honest republican ideals and oppose corruption and monopolies. He warned against bribery and lobby influence, urged purity, and urged independence from half breeds in senatorial elections.
Albany reports detail multiple ballot totals as Democrats redraw their line up in the race for senator. Clarkson N Potter is nominated after John C Jacobs withdraws amid vote void risks. An Albany special notes independent stalwarts may push two administration candidates forward tomorrow.
Batavia on June 21 erupts over possible discovery of remains linked to William Morgan author of Morgan’s Illustrations of Masonry. Evidence includes initials W M and a snuff box manuscript near remains 11 miles west, plus ties to Henry Brown, a noted Mason and lawyer.
The Duke of Sutherland in New York denies seeing the California claimant who claims to be the real Roger Tichborne. Dr. Russell calls the claimant humbug and notes a California lawyer Gen Barnes told them of the case but finds nothing to it. The Duke says they never saw the man and know nothing conclusive.
New York June 22 Ex Collector Murphy pursues an understanding between President Garfield and General Grant. Murphy notes Garfield waited four hours for Conkling after nomination, but saw no meeting. Grant demands fuller explanation of course before meeting the president. Cleveland report details a fatal buggy collision near town as Thomas Garfield is killed and Mrs. Arnold badly injured.
An astronomer writes to a city paper warning seamen to seek safe harbors as the moon reaches inferior conjunction on the 25th and planets shift out of alignment. He predicts gales along the Atlantic, meteor showers, high tides in the West Indies, hurricanes on the east of the Rockies, and a hot July due to heated equatorial air.
In Washington Jane 2 the coalitionists deny yesterday's Republican meeting was legitimate. They claim the coalition will gain presidential backing at a January 28 meeting. Rep Speer of Georgia says he will back the House organization with Republicans and expects Democrats to attack him as they did Mahone. London June 22 The News reports U S government talks on Irish newspaper crime incentives will run through Lionel Sackville West in Washington.
Father O'Connor departs for America with Archbishop Croke's letter commissioning him to declare in America the Irish demand for continued constitutional agitation and to inform Americans that the Irish will press the issue.
London reports a widening rift between extreme agitators and the Land League as clergy denounce armed appeals. James Stephens’ standing is debated with former allies accusing him of espionage while Dublin and New York figures face distrust. Sexton warns the league nears bankruptcy and asks Irish Americans for funds while urging separation from the skirmishers and the force faction.
Dispatch from Tombstone says the town is burning with a large portion already destroyed.
Major Towar at Fort D. A. Russell is ordered to Omaha to help Col. Stanton distribute fonds to the boys in blue. Units at Fort Robinson and Fort Sidney Nebraska shift posts via rail and road to Cheyenne depot and Fort Omaha. A general court martial is set for June 28 1881 at Fort McKinney with an appointed detail. Sherman writes to Capt. Lee defending Union victory and urging truthful Civil War history against Davis.
