Five Pairs of Old Shoes Land Five Boys in Court
Five boys named Parsons McMillan Gross Scully and Fox were arrested for robbing a Union Pacific box car at Egbert after a foreman found five pairs of shoes on the tracks. They admitted the act and were sentenced to one year to thirteen months, then released on habeas corpus ten days later. Their discharge followed hearings showing the car had been burgled before and the boys had taken only five pairs of shoes. The case and the shoes led to their release and the quirk of the dramatic footwear clue.
