The crest of the Kansas river rise is expected tonight in Topeka. If level rises over two feet, city waterworks could be endangered as North Topeka is evacuated and boat patrols move residents. Water depth rivals the 1903 flood while train service stalls.
Washington announces a four section national conservation commission to advise the president on natural resources. Gifford Pinchot chairs the executive committee with Theodore E Burton on water and Senator Reed Smoot on forests. Other members include Knute Nelson on lands and Rep John Dalzell on minerals with Philo Hall John Ham mond Andrew Carnegie Francis Warren James Hill Murdo McKenzie and Frank Joudy among others.
Washington reports an inadvertent policy change gives western states 26 percent of timber sales and forest land rents for the year ending June 30, 1908, instead of the planned 10 percent. If receipts reach about $2 million, western states gain roughly $500,000 for schools roads and bridge improvements rather than $200,000.
The Colorado & Southern completed temporary repairs to its Chugwater valley roadbed and ran the first train since May 31. Regular service between Cheyenne and Qrin Junction will be resumed, with extensive work fixing washed out bridges and track. The pace was rapid and no further delays to traffic are expected.

San Francisco reports author Jack London on the steamer Acon arriving from Apia. London, who began a seven year voyage around the world in the Snark, was said to have landed at Banioa on May 12 and proceeded on the Acon voyage.
Five hundred passengers on a Northern Pacific train stalled at Garrison Montana are starving after flood delays cut off provisions. A courier from Anaconda reports the destitute cargo and notes efforts to send rescue supplies to the marooned group.
Rock Springs Wyoming police shut down all gambling establishments and suppress devices. The action follows pre election promises made by Mayor Park, marking the second time such closures have occurred in the city’s history.
In Wheatland Wyoming on June 8 the Lara mie County Cattle and Horse Growers Association held a spring meeting. Poor road conditions and washed out bridges on the Colorado and Southern delayed attendance but the gathering stayed enthusiastic. Old officers were re elected and the American National association was endorsed.
Robert Threel of Ritzville Washington confessed to a murder in Bentonville Arkansas in February 1907. He was arrested at Lind Washington June 1 and an Arkansas officer travels to secure him but is delayed by Montana washouts. Threel had lived in Ritzville the past year.
Luther Edward Jones a 27 year old balloonist died at Mildred Park after his parachute failed and his head struck a tree limb during a failed ascent. His wife resided in Hot Springs Arkansas.
Rock Springs Wyoming reports rising mine activity at Union Pacific Coal and storage of large coal reserves in Cheyenne amid a planned break with local unions. | The move aims to pressure miners ahead of a potential strike supported by the United Mine Workers of America, with a long contest anticipated during a market slump.
In Albuquerque on June 8 Charles Huling a wealthy ranchman from Chloride Sierra county lies partially paralyzed near death after a suspected poisoning attempt. A heavy dose of strychnine in the sugar bowl was placed to poison Mr and Mrs Huling and their two children but only the couple drank poisoned coffee. Doctors worked five hours to save them but their condition remains critical with no clue to the would be culprit.
Four hobo thieves attacked a Union Pacific station at Point of Rocks after a Japanese lesson on characters. The pursuing Japanese and an Irish foreman overpowered eight hobos and turned the culprits over to the sheriff after a thorough beating.

Senator Crane and Senator Hem dispute bolting claims as unauthorized.
Chicago June A faction within the Taft political machine faced a proposed split of the Louisiana delegation on the Republican National Committee. Eighteen delegates are in play as committee members weigh half Taft and half anti Taft seating, with adjournment to pressure negotiations and avert an immediate vote.
New Jersey Governor Fort was the main speaker at a smoke friendly service on the Hyde Park Reformed Church lawn in East Orange. Over 500 men attended, many smoking during the service, as Pastor F B Pulliam announced similar events. The pastor said the services aimed to blend common sense and religion, with outdoor gatherings for comfort in warm weather.
