Omaha reports five weeks of rail labor unrest as boiler makers machinists and blacksmiths strike. Union Pacific claims 65 percent of positions filled nationwide except North Platte while strikers insist no defections and foresee a long clash for engine rebuilding terms. Car men continue work amid uncertain future and agreement questions.
Seattle reports the body of David Merrill, an Oregon penitentiary escapee, found near the poor farm. Hank Tracy admits Merrill was killed, first claiming self defense, later saying they dueled with an agreed death. Tracy’s location remains unknown.
Atlantic City, N J, reads as a bicycle city with crowds flocking in advance of the national meet of the League of American Wheelmen starting tomorrow. A week of racing is planned as visiting wheelmen pour in.
The yacht Arab owned by J. H. Cameron of the National Bank of the Republic capsized in a squall off Chicago at dusk. Two passengers May Taylor and Edward Harkina drowned after the craft pitched and tangled in ropes and furniture. Cameron, his wife, Ruth Goodman, Dorr Taylor, W. F. Corey, Miss May Taylor, Howard Harkins and skipper Arthur Barber were aboard.
King Edward left Victoria station at 11 35 this morning en route to board the royal yacht Victoria and Albert. The departure was kept secret and the station cleared at 11 o'clock with the king carried in a two horse ambulance guarded by curtains. The royal train arrived in Portsmouth and the king boarded the yacht for a direct cruise to Cowes amid calm seas and hot weather.
Johnston Pennsylvania July 15 A blast in mine 32 of the Berwin White company at Windber ten miles south of here is reported and believed to be serious with possible injuries or fatalities.
The freight handlers strike enters a more serious phase with a complete deadlock that has halted wholesale activity. Both sides promise concessions as talks continue.

Helena Mont July 15 It is proposed to build a wire fence 700 miles long on the Montana Canada boundary. The move follows seizures by Dominion authorities of cattle crossing into Canada as smuggled. The joint project by Canadian and American governments is expected to cost several hundred thousand dollars.
Unknown assailants raided the home of William Hussman a non union man at Upper Lehigh early today taking Hussman and his wife from bed and attempting to burn the house. The stove exploded the furniture was destroyed neighbors quenched the blaze Hussman was left bound and injured by the attackers.
Marconi successfully transmitted a wireless message to Oldham from Cape Ngagen, Denmark, signaling a milestone in long distance telegraphy. The delivery crossed a great distance, highlighting rapid advances in radio communication.
In Lietroft Michigan on July 16 Anthony Rukano age 16 and Adolph Budeller age 18 drowned after their boat capsized on Cass Lake. They were with May Wienler who survived. The Ancient Order of Hibernians opened its national convention in Denver with about five hundred delegates and throngs of friends. Governor Orman and Mayor Wright spoke as President Keating gave a cheerful reply. The morning session included a procession to Sacred Heart church and a Mass by Bishop Matz, with priests in attendance. The meeting adjourned early as a tribute to Archbishop Feehan of Chicago, the order’s chaplain.
Washington reports Brigadier General Bates will succeed Wheaton as head of the army staff. Wheaton entered the army forty-one years ago and was made colonel for bravery at Richmond. Bates served with Shafter in the Spanish American War and later helped secure the surrender of Trias, the lone lieutenant general of the insurgent army.
Washington reports Major General Chaffee criticizes the court martial acquittal of Major Waller and may prompt reexamination by the president. The clash jeopardizes appointing General Smith to command Texas, with Chaffee's stance reopening the case.
New York police arrest Mrs Johana Dwyer in Brooklyn for the murder of her seven year old son Peter. A physician reported the boy dead eight hours prior with a bruised and emaciated body found after being kept under a bed for a week and beaten when he tried to move.

Mr and Mrs Ord Preston of New York arrived in Cheyenne this afternoon and will visit Laramie tomorrow to see R H Homer before continuing west to the Pacific coast and Japan on their honeymoon. Mrs Preston was formerly Miss Fannie Converse of Cheyenne. He is a young banker and broker on Wall Street.
London July 16 Thomas Lipton moves toward a 1903 America’s Cup challenge with final plans for a working yacht. Draughtsmen prepare drawings at Fairlie yard while Shamrock II officers are hired. Despite shareholder pressure Lipton persists in pursuing the contest. The Metropolitan dining room and short order restaurant is open for business.
