In Washington on January 16 Senator Clark rejected claims of a new short line from Salt Lake to Calientes. Reports say Burlington Railway is closing a deal with Harriman interests to run trains to Los Angeles via Clark's route. A Washington conference with Manderson Kerens Clark and Harriman representatives discussed buying or paralleling the Short Line to Salt Lake. If agreed Burlington trains could reach Los Angeles by year’s end.
Fire swept the Royal Electric Light company works in Montreal leaving the city in absolute darkness with no duplicate plant. The loss is enormous and extra police will patrol the city tonight due to the blackout.
King Edward opened Parliament today in London in a scene of splendor matching February's celebration. The ceremony featured extensive pageantry and grand ceremonials signaling the forthcoming coronation next June.

Mayor Moores orders containment as authorities escort the man to the health office where he is found to have a severe case and is moved to the emergency hospital. Formaldehyde and carbolic acid are used to airing the health office and police precautions are set to keep sufferers away from the building.
Dr Paul Walter of Clinton performed a pioneering operation transplanting a cornea from a live rabbit eye into William Strickel of Alamosa. The patient had prior eye injuries from a California mine accident. Results unclear after three weeks. the procedure was described as the first attempt to restore an entire cornea.
News from New York reports a clash near Dibulo in Colombia where two government regiments fired on each other mistaking allies for rebels. The battle lasted hours with hundreds killed or wounded before General Folicls halted the fighting upon learning the error.

Chicago January 16 reports several arrests of grocers and others for selling adulterated foods. The poor food commission found city flooded with adulterated extracts and domestic powders and says genuine articles are hard to find. A general reform campaign will be pursued.

Victor Colo January 16 A group of ore thieves were found at four o clock in the morning in the Independence mine. Officers descended the shaft and fired and the thieves returned fire. Five hundred feet underground a fierce fight ensued. One officer and one robber are believed killed. Thieves cut lights and escaped using known workings. One robbery had been continuing for some time. Intense excitement prevailed.
Seven masked men held up a Fort Smith Arkansas Kansas City Southern train shortly after midnight. They opened the express and mail cars and took mail material but little money. United States marshals are scouring the country for the robbers.
Fire at Union Burlington station on Adams street destroys over a million dollars worth of railroad tickets for the Burlington, Pennsylvania and Alton roads. The building was saved and sixty embraes narrowly escaped with their lives.
Ouray police report a lone highwayman assaulted merchant Bert Smith in January. The robber aimed an ammonia syringe at Smith, blinding him briefly, but Smith escaped as citizens closed in on the intruder.
In Central City Colorado a free for all in the red light district ends with Joseph Finn fatally shot in the thigh early today. Several participants were arrested but the bullet has not been found.
